What makes the SHE Master of health Professions Education Programme unique?

By

Within the field of medical and health sciences education, the School of Health Professions Education, offering this program, is known as one of the top master programs within this field. Three reasons why:

First, the SHE Master program is strongly research-oriented.

The interrelationship between educational theory, research, and educational practice is continuously emphasized in our programme.

SHE from Maastricht University is the most productive research group in health professions education in the world. Out of the 10 most productive researchers, 3 are from Maastricht. Our staff is among the most cited professors in scientific health professions education literature world-wide (Prof Cees van der Meuten, Prof Diana Dolmans, Prof Jeroen van Merriënboer, Prof Albert Scherpbier).

Second, the program is explicitly internationally orientated

The MHPE is a highly ranked degree programme in health professions education with highly valued staff and a NVAO quality mark with a distinctive feature for internationalization. Our Master of Science (M5c) program is officially accredited by the Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders/Belgium (NVAO). This implies that the program is of a high scientific level, is delivered according to high academic standards with high quality course materials and does result in high quality master theses according to European Standards.

SHE-MHPE attracts an international group of professionals from a variety of educational, professional, international, and cultural backgrounds. Participants acquire international and intercultural skills and knowledge, which prepared them for careers in a globalizing world in an international community of health professions educators.

The strong international orientation also can be seen in the number of international partner institutions. SHE-MHPE is proud to collaborate with Suez Canal University in Egypt, the Universities of British Colombia and Western Ontario in Canada, the Academy of Medicine Singapore, and the New York University School of Medicine. Each partner school delivers several courses characterized by their contextual strengths and flavors and allows flexible exchange of knowledge.

Third, the program focuses on innovative learning environments.

There is a strong emphasis on self-directed learning and use of authentic problems as triggers for learning, which enables participants to apply what they have learned in their own professional situation and see immediate results. There is also a strong focus on collaborative learning in which students from various professional, international, and cultural backgrounds collaborate, provide peer feedback, and gain insight in each other’s working environments while collaborating on their assignments. Participants furthermore receive extensive qualitative feedback from teachers and are guided and supported by a personal mentor.

The program received National Accreditation in 2007 and was re-accredited in 2014. In 2014 the program was additionally awarded the Distinctive Quality Feature `Internationalisation'.
