Book Presentation: Een kabinet vol kleur

On 15 March 2018, a new book by MACCH-associate Ernst Homburg will be launched during a symposium on pigments and natural history collections at Teylers Museum in Haarlem. The book – Een kabinet vol kleur. De collectie schildersmaterialen van de Amsterdamse verfhandelaar Michiel Hafkenscheid (1772-1846) – written together with art historian Ineke Pey, analyses in depth an early-nineteenth collection of painters’ materials, preserved at Teylers Museum.

The collection is unique in its broadness and versatility. Very few collections of old pigments, gums, dyes etc. exist at all, and none of them are of this size. The book gives a complete overview of all the materials in the collection, discussing their composition, origins and nomenclature. It will be an important reference work for restorers, conservators and anyone interested in the history of painters’ materials.

Those who are interested in receiving an invitation for the symposium and/or the book presentation can send an email to Ernst Homburg.
