Critical Choices in Qualitative Research

Looking for a course that will help you getting started with your qualitative research project? Or are you feeling lost in data analysis or just in need of some critical reflection on your analysis?

COURSE INFORMATION

In this course, the focus is on the essential moments of choice in the qualitative research process, including selecting your research design and your analytical strategy. Your own project is the central theme guiding you through the course. Depending on where you are in your study, you will get hands-on with designing your study or analyzing and interpreting your data.

Many opportunities for peer exchange and individual consultations will enable you to reflect on and shape your own work, as well as learn about the moments of choice involved in qualitative research more broadly.

Faculty: The course is delivered by a multidisciplinary team of health professionals, social scientists and educationalists who have been involved in a wide range of qualitative research projects. Including qualitative research projects in health sciences, health professions education and beyond, including global health and medicine.

This course is intended for PhD students and other researchers, who are planning or conducting a qualitative research project, and wish to extend their knowledge and skills related to qualitative research design and/or data analysis.

Writing a PhD Research Proposal

COURSE INFORMATION

The course consists of a campus-based module of 8 days, a distance-based module and a third and final campus-based module in Maastricht. Participants will be assigned to two personal supervisors, who provide feedback and coaching during the whole of the course. At the end, participants will have completed a preliminary version of their PhD research proposal.

The benefit of this advanced course is for participants to learn how to write a high quality PhD research proposal consisting of a series of studies expected to be of interest to international peer reviewed journals. Students will acquire the relevant knowledge and skills to conduct an in-depth literature study on a subject in the domain of assessment and evaluation or learning environments, to formulate research questions and to choose an appropriate research methodology. After completing the full course, participants can apply for admittance to the international SHE PhD programme by submitting their PhD research proposal to the director of the SHE research programme.

Participants Profile:

You are planning a career in health professions education research and you want to take the first step under guidance of experts in this domain? Do you have a special interest in research in medical or health sciences education? Do you want to write a doctoral dissertation in this field and obtain a PhD degree?

  • You have an MSc in Health Professions Education and you want to move on towards a PhD.Are you a MSc+ in health professions education, a (beginning) researcher in this domain? Or are you a (para)medical educationalist/curriculum designer with a strong research orientation and interested in the latest research insights and obtaining a PhD.
  • Note: This is not a beginner’s course on research. SHE offers this advanced course focusing on how to perform cutting edge research. You are expected to have the following prior knowledge: You have a higher education degree equivalent to a Dutch Master’s degree in one of the health professions, such as a master’s degree in medicine, health sciences, educational sciences, psychology or any other related paramedical discipline, such as nursing, physiotherapy, dentistry etc.
