SHE Staff with a hobby

By

Many SHE staff members have interesting hobbies and in many varieties. The SHE motto remains work hard play hard therefore, we introduce in this edition PhD Serge Mordang

Running to the end of a PhD

I am PhD-student with a running hobby. In April, I ran the Marathon of Rotterdam. On first sight, doing a PhD and running a marathon are not comparable. However, I came to find that the two have quite some similarities.

First, you cannot do them without a good preparation. You need to ask yourself a couple of questions before you start: What is your time schedule? What kind of training do I need to focus on? What obstacles are on my way towards the end-goal? Do I have enough support from my environment?

Second, there is the thing of actually doing it. Often you start without any (time)pressure, while at a certain point you stress out about the fact that you will need to make haste to finish within the set time limit. Around halfway, you are getting second thoughts and are asking yourself why you started in the first place. However, you also immediately realize that this is what you want, and quitting is not an option. And even as the last mile is the longest (as always), you can still force yourself to step up a gear and finish.

At the end, you can celebrate the great achievement with your family and friends. The pressure is off and that calls for a drink!

However, the question remains, what will be the next challenge?

Well done Serge! Keep on running
