New BA Digital Society

In September 2019, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) will welcome students to a new BA Digital Society.

We already live in a digital society, in which every aspect of our lives is being affected by digital technologies: how we communicate and socialise; how we work, learn, create and participate in politics, the economy and cultural activities. The new BA Digital Society at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) provides students with knowledge and tools to understand the relationships between digitalisation and social change.

Digitalisation promises tremendous benefits, but it also raises challenges. For example, robots can take on tasks that are dangerous for people but at the same time can be a threat to people’s employment possibilities. Digital data collection may improve healthcare by providing personalised treatment but at the same time challenges patient privacy and solidarity. Digital skills open up new forms of creativity and social interaction, but not all individuals have the skills needed to participate and thus risk being excluded.

To launch this exciting new programme, we are holding a celebration on 14 November 2019. We look forward to welcoming the new students, and colleagues from across the University and other regional and national stakeholders. It will feature video artist Geert Mul and a panel discussion with representatives from government, industry and civil society.

If you are interested in attending or would like more information about the programme, check the FASoS website for further details.
