Supplement Surviving Dependants Act (Anw)

By   MUO-HR
In January, we informed you that the discontinuation of the Surviving Dependants Act (Anw) survivor benefit as a supplement to the ABP surviving dependants pension would be postponed. The additional information previously promised can be found below.

The Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) has decided to pursue a sector-wide solution in the form of a supplemental insurance policy with attractive terms intended specifically for employees of all Dutch universities. This will concern a policy to be purchased individually, and for which you will pay your own premium. Negotiations with potential providers of such a product are currently in full swing. More on this later.

Is there anything I can do right now?
Lay out the specifics of your partner’s financial situation in the event of your passing:

  • Learn more about the discontinuation of the Anw survivor benefit on the ABP’s website (only in Dutch).
  • Go to MijnABP or check your pension statement to see what amount of Anw survivor benefit you might be eligible for.
  • Decide – potentially with the help of a financial adviser – whether additional insurance is desirable in your particular situation.

Note: not everyone will have a need for supplementary insurance. For some employees, on the other hand, it can be extremely important. The discontinuation of the Anw survivor benefit will primarily affect those employees with partners of an age between 40 years and state pension age.

What other information can I expect to receive?
We will inform you regarding the option to be offered at the sectoral level no later than the first week of April, so that you may take it into consideration when deciding what to do.

What must I do before 1 May 2018?
Should supplementary insurance turn out to be the right choice for you, it is important that you purchase this coverage before 1 May of this year.
