LIMES: Three funded PhD positions on MACCH related research topics

LIMES is a research project with 13 vacancies for PhD positions in the domain of the humanities and social sciences, centred on the theme of ‘The Hardening and Softening of Borders: Europe in a Globalising World’. The project LIMES, the Latin word for border, is funded by the European Commission’s Marie-Curie COFUND programme and coordinated by CERiM.

Conducting research within the framework of LIMES means working on the frontline of societal and scientific innovation, and is therefore particularly attractive for a new generation of interdisciplinary researchers. LIMES provides participants with a rich training programme encompassing general research skills, methods, public outreach, and dissemination of knowledge. Tailor-made secondments at one of our external partners are further geared towards extending the employability of LIMES graduates for academic as well as non-academic positions.

LIMES is providing no less than 13 PhD positions, three of which are supervised by MACCH affiliated researchers.

In cooperation with the Centre for the Social Historical Centre Limburg (SHCL) and the Centre for the Regional History of Limburg (RHCL), the Department of History in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers two PhD positions in transnational business history supervised by MACCH steering committee member Dr. Nico Randeraad:

The following project is supervised by MACCH affiliated researcher Prof. dr. Leonie Cornips:

LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL BORDERS: TRANSPARENT OR NOT In this project, the focus will be on how coal miners’ languages and cultures in the former mining region north of Aachen in Germany (Low German/German speaking) and the Eastern Mine District with Heerlen as its centre in the Netherlands (Dutch/dialect speaking) are taken up in new contexts with new actors, how they are authenticated and legitimated during public events that are considered unique for the region. These two neighbouring areas are separated by a national border but share a common coal mining past and a common linguistic past. For more information, see:
