Call: commit yourself to a good UM cause!

Calling all athletic alumni from Maastricht University! Get your tracksuit bottoms and running shoes out of the closet because on 6 October 2019, UM will participate in the Brussels marathon (full, half or 6,5 km) as team ‘Running4Research’. The runners are raising money for two special projects at UM. Do you want to run with us? Or do you want to support us in a different way - because that's possible, too!

Why should you participate?

There are actually too many reasons to list. But the most important are:

  • You’ll be contributing to two important projects within UM.
  • You’ll be bringing attention to the importance of scientific research.
  • If you’re running: running is fun (especially in a group!) and it keeps you healthy.

Which projects will you be supporting?

You can choose that yourself! You can choose one of the two projects below. Both are linked to UM and the University Fund Limburg/SWOL.

Research into acute brain injury
Every year, 130,000 people in the Netherlands suffer from a brain injury. The impact on their daily lives—and that of their loved ones—is often major. People with brain injuries can suffer from memory loss, paralysis, speech disorders and more. Some even become severely disabled. Scientists from UM (Brain Battle Fund) are conducting ground-breaking research into how brain cells can ‘recover’. Financial resources are desperately needed for this research! www.hersenstrijd.org

Do you want to contribute to the Brain Battle Fund now? Or would you rather not run along with us, but still want to support this project? If so, then click here. Please note: write ‘Running4Research’ in the message field of the donation form.

Transgender studies
Research on transgender people is important! Imagine waking up in a body that doesn’t feel like ‘you’. Or that you have breasts or an Adam’s apple, while that is not at all what you want. These are just a few examples of what trans persons experience before they undergo a gender transition. Trans persons don’t feel at home in the gender role they were given at birth. This research examines the well-being, self-image and brain of transgender people during their transition. This will help us learn more about what they need. And that is key!

Do you want to contribute to this transgender research now? Or would you rather not run along with us, but still want to support this project? If so, then click here.

What is the Brussels marathon?

The Brussels marathon is the largest running event in Belgium. Participants run a hilly, challenging and beautiful course in and around the city of Brussels. The 2019 marathon will take place on 6 October. And UM's Running4Reserach team is raring to go!

How can you register for the marathon?

Click here to register. Our team code is MAAS15122. Please also send us an email at campusbrussels@maastrichtuniversity.nl telling us that you are going to participate. Whether you’re running a full or half marathon or 6,5 km, you’ll be on the Running4Research team.

As a UM alum, you can make a real difference! Your support is therefore very appreciated.
