During the past two years, the Association of Dutch Universities (VSNU) and Dutch university libraries have been negotiating with publishers about reading and publishing in academic journals. The results are promising: universities have made agreements with publishers including Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Sage and Lippencott. Academics at Dutch universities can now publish Open Access in over 8,000 journals of these publishers at no additional cost. As a result of the deals with these major publishers 57% of the Dutch articles can be published Open Access without additional costs for the researchers involved. This means that research results can be made available more quickly and without cost to the entire world.
Because the possibilities are not yet being fully utilised by all academics, the Dutch universities have launched a national campaign, also in Maastricht. In the coming weeks you will be informed in various ways about the importance of Open Access publishing and the available opportunities to do so without cost. Our University Library has all the information about the possibilities and would be happy to provide you with personal advice. For instance, it recently introduced a convenient browser which shows you exactly what the options are for your preferred journals for publishing.
The Executive Board is proud of the scholarship and science being conducted at our university. Of course we want to share it with the world. The larger the audience, the greater the impact our work will have. Making research output Open Access empowers fair sharing of scientific evidence amongst all stakeholders contributing to the advancement of science and society. So therefore we call upon everyone: Open Up to Open Access!
