The alchemy of assessment, feedback and learning
In a recent paper Watling and Ginsburg discuss the relationship between feedback, assessment and learning.1 This is a must-read paper for anyone interested in assessment. They use the word alchemy in their title. And that is exactly the right word.

SHE-Special Interest Group ‘Educational Change and Co-creation’
We would like to introduce you to the special interest group on ‘Educational Change and Co-creation’. The researchers in this group share a passion for investigating how to improve education through involving different stakeholders in the instructional development, implementation and evaluation processes. Learners, teachers and educational experts play a central role in co-creation or participatory design approaches. Additionally, interdisciplinary cooperation among teachers and/or supervisors, and input from health professionals as well as patients, are indispensable.

PBL: It sounds nice in theory, but …
Over the last months, several teachers have asked me questions about PBL. “We tried the seven-jump approach, but it did not work in our school.” “We still call our program PBL, but it is not true PBL.” “PBL sounds nice in theory, but in practice it is demanding and challenging.” “What should I do with the use of laptops in my PBL session? Should I ask my students to abandon it? What if other teachers allow students to read aloud from their laptop?” “Doesn’t PBL sound old-fashioned? PBL is not innovative.”

From 8 until 11 July 2019, I was able to join the 2nd European Doctoral Summer School in Professional Development at the University of York, UK. The Summer School was organised by three collaborating universities: University of York, the University of Munster, and Maastricht University. Together with fourteen other PhD students (five from each university), I got the unique opportunity to learn in an interdisciplinary and international setting: it was an eye-opener to hear how much a PhD trajectory differs among countries and disciplines. Moreover, it was confirmed that we can be very lucky being a PhD student at our ‘own’ SHE!

SHE Dissertation Award for Alina Smirnova
In our school, we have about 10 PhD candidates each year that defend their PhD Thesis. Many of these theses are of very high scientific quality. To honor our PhD candidates and to celebrate scientific progress in health professions education we offer an annual SHE Dissertation Award for the best PhD thesis defended in a particular year. A jury has studied all theses that were defended in 2018 and, after careful consideration, selected one thesis for the SHE Dissertation Award 2018. The winner was announced at the SHE Gathering by Diana Dolmans, organized parallel to the AMEE conference in Vienna. We congratulate Alina with this great achievement.

In the meantime …under construction……MHPE OLD AND NEW
Sometimes it feels like a roller coaster: designing a new Master of Health Professions Education curriculum while running the existing one at the same time. I certainly feel a similar excitement: we are discussing different structures that will allow more flexibility in time, different specializations, and a completely new way of assessment. Talking to staff, partners, students and alumni has proven to be very valuable. And now it is time to start building…. To be continued.
