Diversity policy is taking shape

In order to give concrete shape to its diversity policy in the coming years, Maastricht University is currently recruiting a Programme Manager Diversity and Inclusivity. This employee (0.8 FTE) will be tasked with shaping this policy and steering the organisation in the right direction. In addition, the programme manager will act as Secretary of the Diversity & Inclusivity Advisory Council, presided over by Rector Prof. dr. Rianne Letschert. On 8 November, a meeting on diversity and inclusivity will be convened for university staff including deans, directors and representatives of the University Council, the Local Consultative Body and other university bodies.
All this follows up on the advisory report presented by the Diversity Working Group to the Executive Board, titled 'Diversity at the CORE'. The working group consisted of Prof. Andries de Grip, Dr. Isabella Grabner, Hay Manders, Albertine Zanting, Cerien Streefland (Chair) and Daniela Trani (Secretary). In accordance with the strategic programme ‘Community at the CORE’, the working group fleshed out why diversity policy should be implemented at UM and what the focus should be. The idea is to bring more balance in the male-female ratio and people with different ethnic or religious backgrounds or social status, diverse nationalities, sexual orientations and ages, as well as people with a disability or chronic illness. ‘Rector of Diversity’ Finally, the Executive Board has earmarked funds to UM research into diversity and inclusivity, to be allocated in consultation with the Management Team. Rianne Letschert: "Inclusivity is actually the goal of diversity. Let’s put it this way: diversity means being invited to a party, inclusivity means being asked for a dance. This fits well with our strategic programme, in which we focus on the university community. A real ‘community’ will only come about when people who differ on many fronts don’t only tolerate each other, but also work together and learn from each other."
