Imagine: you graduated successfully, found your dream job and live in the city. You seem happier than ever. At least, until you get restless. Would you leave everything behind and go? Tamar Valkenier, alumna from Maastricht University, would at least. Since 2015, she has been a full-time adventurer. What does her life look like?
‘‘I was very content, but in my head increasingly louder voices were shouting, ‘Tamar, are you coming outside to play?’.’’

Kids ‘go to college’ at UM
Maastricht University has been offering lectures for primary school students in the South Limburg region for 10 years through KidzCollege. In these lectures, Dutch primary school students from group 8 (12-year-olds) are introduced to science in an accessible, comprehensible and fascinating way. The lectures cover a wide range of current topics, from trauma surgery and children's rights to DNA testing and the role of small blood vessels.
For example, during the lecture ‘Brokkenboel’ on 15 May 2019, Prof. Martijn Poeze showed what can go wrong with your body and how trauma surgeons try to repair it. What will happen to you if you have had an accident and how will the surgeons make you better? After a brief introduction, the children were also able get to work themselves. For example, they were able to make a plaster cast together, one of them was allowed to enter the ambulance on the stretcher, and ‘bones’ were screwed together.
The lecture series for this school year is fully booked. Keep an eye on the website (in Dutch) for information about future editions.
