ITEM CROSS-BORDER PORTAL launched
ITEM supports and promotes - from science - the euregional and transnational functioning of society. In order for society to use ITEM's research, a cross-border portal was launched on September 24th during a GIPTOGETHER-meeting of crossborder informationpoints (GIP's) in Eupen.
ITEM's cross-border portal - itemcrossborderportal.maastrichtuniversity.nl - has a dual function of housing a knowledge base on cross-border issues and of housing the ITEM casuistry (real life cases).
A new home for the ITEM casuistry (real life cases): Do you experience problems that impede your mobility across borders or which hamper cross-border cooperation, for example in the area of social security, access to education, migration legislation or taxation? Do these problems need to be looked at from a scientific point of view? Submit your real life cases via ITEMcrossborderportal.maastrichtuniversity.nl
If you are interested in previous analyses conducted by ITEM you can find anonymised cases in the case database as part of the ITEM knowledge base.

B-Solutions Project “Recognition of qualifications”
The activities for the B-Solutions project “Roadmap and factsheet for the recognition of qualifications for highly demanded professions” have recently started. This project, submitted by the Province of Limburg (NL) as lead applicant and carried out by ITEM, brings together partners along the Dutch border comprising partners from the Netherlands, Belgium, North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony.
The goal of the project is to develop roadmaps and factsheets for highly demanded professions. These roadmaps and factsheets are two separate documents aimed at boosting cross-border mobility and employability by improving recognition. In particular, the project focuses on how recognition takes place for selected highly demanded regulated professions. The documents will indicate how competent authorities evaluate qualifications to provide first line supporters and citizens with information beyond that which is readily available. Furthermore, the project seeks to raise awareness among citizens regarding their rights and duties during recognition procedures.
Early findings and methods employed in the project are due to be presented during an expert workshop jointly organised by ITEM and the Benelux on the 15th November in Brussels.
The project “Roadmap and factsheet for the recognition of qualifications for highly demanded professions” is financed by the European Union.

Recognition of Qualifications: Publication Practical Explanatory Documents
Cross-border work involves a lot to be taken into account. A much-discussed aspect is the recognition of qualifications. During these procedures, competent authorities check whether a person's diplomas and professional experience meet certain standards. Such processes are anything but obvious. In order to provide clarity in the complex subject matter, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has commissioned ITEM to draw up a set of explanatory documents. ITEM is pleased to announce the publication of these documents.

Update on DigiD for cross-border workers
ITEM investigates a number of aspects in relation to cross-border work. One obstacle that cross-border workers face involves obtaining a 'DigiD', the Dutch digital identification system. Regarding this obstacle proceedings were initiated in recent months, which have led to a ruling of the District Court of The Hague. Unfortunately, this ruling is not satisfactory, and an appeal has been lodged.
Case Summary
A person of Belgian nationality works for a company in The Netherlands. She has applied for a DigiD code in the Netherlands. DigiD stands for Digital Identity, which is required for logging in to many public websites and a large number of websites of other organizations that operate in the Netherlands. Without a DigiD code it is impossible, for example, to view one's pension accrual status online; access the inbox on Mijnoverheid.nl, a personal website on public matters; or apply for income-related fiscal compensations known as Toeslagen.
