Arts and Culture

Do you have broad interests and are you a critical thinker? Do you enjoy discussing current social issues? Do you want to understand their historical roots and engage in philosophical reflection? If so, the bachelor's programme in Arts and Culture is the right choice for you.

You will learn to understand Western culture by looking at how it shapes and is shaped by art, science, technology, media and politics. You will explore the issues of modern society from a variety of perspectives. This interdisciplinary approach (based on philosophy, literature and art studies, history, and science and technology studies) will teach you to understand and frame complex social issues.

You will learn to think analytically, make connections across a variety of perspectives and develop strong argumentation skills. This will make you an attractive employee in a variety of jobs. Arts and Culture graduates work, for instance, as consultants for cultural institutions, policy advisors for governments, journalists and researchers. However, most graduates will opt for a master's degree before they enter the job market.

Information for Dutch-speaking students

All teaching materials are provided in English and students are attending English-taught lectures and tutorials. However, the programme will also offer you the possibility to write your exams, papers and BA thesis in Dutch if you are a Dutch-native speaker.

Why Emma chose to study Arts and Culture in Maastricht
“I looked at the programmes at FASoS and attended an Arts and Culture lecture during one of the open days. That sounded like a right fit for me. I was intrigued by the interdisciplinary aspect of the courses. After a year I would explain this as ‘combining different disciplines to address a specific topic’. For example, we don’t just learn about history or philosophy, but we learn about the history of philosophy. We learn about how everything is connected in society.”

What she hopes to get out of this programme
“Of course, I hope to gain a lot of knowledge. And I hope to figure out what I am truly interested in. This will help me for my master’s and for my future career. At FASoS, we are learning to become critical thinkers who question our society. I am sure that the teaching methods here will allow me to become more independent in studying and in working professionally later on.”

An Experience Day allows you to experience what it is like to be a student in one of our bachelor's programmes. You will attend a lecture and participate in a tutorial group, accompanied by advanced students who will be happy to answer all your questions. Experience Days are intended for pre-university grammar school students in their last year of study who preferably have visited an Open Day at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in Maastricht. UM and FASoS Campus Tour

At FASoS, we offer our prospective students the opportunity to join a campus tour on 13 March and 1 May 2024.
