Conference on Crossing Borders in Arts and Heritage, 18-19 March 2018

On 18 and 19 March 2018, the Maastricht Centre for Arts and Culture, Conservation and Heritage will host its annual, transdisciplinary conference together with the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht. This year’s theme ‘Crossing Borders in Arts & Heritage’ will explore the challenges we encounter when arts and heritage cross geographical borders today or which persist because of past cross-border movements.

Symposium on Artistic Research, 20 March 2018

On Tuesday 20 March 2018, MACCH is co-organising an event on Merian, a current initiative to explore the potential and feasibility of a new Maastricht-based graduate school in artistic research. The idea for Merian is for artists and academics from various backgrounds to work in a shared, transdisciplinary research environment, moving between institutions, and addressing societal challenges.

Movement Matters Debate: Archive as Instrument for Innovation?, 8 October 2017

As part of the exhibition Movement Matters, 20 jaar Nederlandse Dansdagen, the Dutch Dance festival initiated a debate on the topic of archive. The purpose of the debate was to encourage reflection and dialogue on the relationship between archive and innovation, and to consider how that relationship might specifically relate to the field of dance. The debate, held on 8 October 2017 at Theater aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht, was organised in a collaboration between the Dutch Dance Festival, Maastricht University Masters’ program Arts and Heritage, and MACCH.

Fourth Training Event for NACCA PhD Candidates, 26-30 June 2017

The fourth NACCA (The research and training programme New Approaches in the Conservation of Contemporary Art, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network) meeting was organised by Glasgow University and was hosted by the Centre of Contemporary Arts and the Glasgow School of Art. It was the second summer school, and concentrated on the work in progress. During an intense and successful three-day programme PhD researchers and supervisors met to evaluate the process and outcomes thus far.

First Conference of the Limburg Landscape History, 16 June 2017

Landscape is increasingly recognised as a key element in heritage. An important moment in this respect was the European Landscape convention of 2000 – also called the Florence convention – which defines landscape in all its diversity as fundamental to European heritage. The way heritage is approached in this convention is closely linked to the FARO-convention of 2005, which is often seen as its complement.

Vandalism & Art, 8-9 June 2017

‘Vandalisme’, a term coined in 1794 by Henri Gregoire, now relates in the communal consciousness to the intentional damage to public heritage. It is an ever present risk for art displayed in public venues. Acts of vandalism are often instigated by political causes, religious beliefs, psychological motivation or public unawareness. Cultural heritage managers have to deal immediately, under scrutiny, with the visually intrusive effects whenever these acts take place.

Research into Regional Cultural Participation

Joop de Jong and his research team, consisting of Sandra van Helden and Ward Schoonbrood, have been commissioned by Tout Maastricht, with financial support of the Municipality of Maastricht, to prepare the questionnaire for a survey on cultural participation in Maastricht. In November 2017, 12,000 residents of Maastricht, age 6 years and older, Dutch and non-Dutch, received a printed questionnaire with 44 questions on cultural participation (in Dutch and English).

Research into Preservation of Historic Windmills and Watermills

On an invitation by the board of the Molenstichting Limburg (Limburg Mills Society), a stakeholder analysis and an analysis and evaluation of the position of the Molenstichting Limburg will be conducted by Joop de Jong, Sandra van Helden and Ward Schoonbrood. In the spring of 2017, the Molenstichting Limburg presented an ambitious plan for the preservation of historic windmills and watermills in Limburg, which requires sufficient support from all public and private parties concerned.

Book Presentation: Een kabinet vol kleur

On 15 March 2018, a new book by MACCH-associate Ernst Homburg will be launched during a symposium on pigments and natural history collections at Teylers Museum in Haarlem. The book – Een kabinet vol kleur. De collectie schildersmaterialen van de Amsterdamse verfhandelaar Michiel Hafkenscheid (1772-1846) – written together with art historian Ineke Pey, analyses in depth an early-nineteenth collection of painters’ materials, preserved at Teylers Museum.
