Research Quality Assurance system

Audits of CAPHRI research projects
|
|
As you may already know, CAPHRI has a Research Quality Assurance system that is designed to support our researchers by ensuring that they know all the requirements regarding ethics approval, consent, data protection and other aspects of research regulation.
As well as educating researchers, Research Quality Officer David Shaw conducts audits of research projects. For researchers this involves filling in a short form and sending some documents, followed by a short meeting where the audited project is discussed. David then writes an audit report summarising the findings. Researchers whose projects have been audited so far have found it a helpful process. Going forward, audit reports will be shared with budget line managers (BBs) as well as researchers to ensure transparency, as approved by the Research Leaders. Participation in the audit process is essential to ensuring that our research quality system helps not only the Institute, but also those who read your research, and you yourself as a researcher.
David looks forward to discussing your research projects with you and hope you will be able to join the webinar introducing researchers to the audit process on 25 March (see also 'events' below)
More information about the Research Quality Assurance system can be found on our website.

We are deeply saddened and concerned by the situation in Ukraine. Our concern, sympathy and solidarity go out to our Ukrainian and Russian colleagues with families and friends now directly caught up in armed conflict. We will offer any support we can provide to staff affected.
At the request of the FHML Board we are listing existing partnerships with Russia/Belarus. Besides, we would like to know about supporting initiatives within our School for staff and/or students from the region. We kindly request you to inform Chantal Claessens (chantal.claessens@maastrichtuniversity.nl) about such partnerships and supporting initiatives.
Information and support for staff can be found on this page. For immediate assistance on work-related or financial issues, please contact CAPHRI’s Managing Director Martijn Streefkerk (m.streefkerk@maastrichtuniversity.nl) or your supervisor.

Goodbye, dream publication
|
|
If the results of his PhD research are disappointing, Mark Spigt (Optimising Patient Care) thinks he can forget about his scientific career. He experiences how vulnerable science is. "I could have changed a few zeros into ones. But I didn't. On the contrary, I have proved that I am honest by publishing my negative results."
In Het Financieele Dagblad, Mark Spigt talks about setbacks and integrity in science.

The New York Times wrote about the phenomenon of bigorexia; inspired by images of very muscular male bodies on social media, more and more young boys are developing a preoccupation with not feeling muscular enough, excessive weightlifting and a strict adherence to eating foods that lower weight and build muscle. Thomas Gültzow (Promoting Health and Personalised Care, now employed by FPN) was one of the few scientists to research the influence of social media on the male ideal of beauty.

Bacteria & Borders is a collaboration between visual artist Marlies Vermeulen and social scientist Alena Kamenshchikova (Health Inequities and Societal Participation). In a series of podcasts they tell more about their collaboration between science and art, the pitfalls and the unique chances. During the pandemic, their research became more current than ever. This collaboration was made possible by the Mingler Scholarship, awarded to Marlies Vermeulen and Klasien Horstman in 2020.
Bacteria and Borders will be displayed until 18 March at Zuyd Hogeschool, Nieuw Eyckholt 300, Heerlen. Afterwards, it will travel to various institutions and universities.
