Case study: Connecting Conversations
How can we accurately describe the experienced quality of care in nursing homes from the resident’s perspective? Six years ago, the healthcare organisations that are part of the Living Lab in Ageing and Long-Term Care Limburg (AWO-L) were in need of an answer to this question. The resulting research project led to the development of an assessment method called Connecting Conversations (Ruimte voor Zorg) and to several follow-up studies. “I think that now, six years later, we can be proud of the fact that our method is still of interest”, says Katya Sion, researcher at the Living Lab, who won the UM Impact Prize 2021 for her work.

FHML- Ethics Review Committee seeks new members
Come and help the FHML- Ethics Review Committee (FHML-REC) review fascinating research proposals, and learn about research ethics!
We are looking for several new members for FHML-REC, the Faculty’s research ethics committee. This offer is open to all staff and PhD students within the Faculty. No expertise in research ethics is required; you can learn the skills as you work with the committee.
FHML-REC is responsible for reviewing all “non-WMO” research projects conducted within the Faculty. The committee has two alternating panels, with monthly meetings; initial decisions are communicated within two weeks. The committee’s membership includes staff from many different departments within the faculty to ensure a broad range of expertise.
If you join FHML-REC you can expect to attend six meetings per year (each of two hours duration), with lots of interesting discussion of the ethical issues raised by research within FHML. Each meeting involves reading around five applications beforehand to facilitate discussion.
If you are interested in applying, please contact the Chair of the Committee, David Shaw: d.shaw@maastrichtuniversity.nl

Take part in the FHML/MUMC+ Open Science Survey
The FHML Open Science Team would like to extend a warm invitation to participate in a survey aimed at gathering information on your experiences with Open Science. The survey is designed to take approximately 15 minutes to complete and will provide us with valuable insights into the current state of Open Science at FHML/Maastricht UMC+.
Open science is a movement that focuses on making research more transparent, accessible, and reproducible, and is quickly becoming the norm in the scientific landscape. It encompasses a wide range of practices, from open data sharing to pre-registering study designs, and has the potential to enhance the quality and impact of scientific research greatly.
You are at the forefront of this movement, and your experiences and perspectives are essential to shaping the future of Open Science at FHML/Maastricht UMC+. The survey therefore aims to gather information on your current practices, your views on open science, and the challenges you have faced in implementing open science practices in your work. The team will subsequently use this information to draft the FHML Open Science Action Plan.
