Olaf Schijns chairman of the section Functional Neurosurgery at the EANS
|
|
Per August 1st 2020, neurosurgeon dr. Olaf Schijns from the Maastricht UMC+ and staff member of the MHeNS research school takes office as chairman a.i. of the section Functional Neurosurgery at the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), the European association with about 6.000 neurosurgeon–members from all over Europe. In first instance as chairman ad interim, after which the official appointment will take place in October 2020 during the annual general meeting (AGM).
Functional neurosurgery involves the surgical intervention in structures of the central and peripheral nervous sytem (brain/spinal cord/peripheral nerves) with the aim to take influence on the function. Examples of these surgical interventions are removal of epileptogenic parts of the brain to cure chronic epilepsy or deep brain stimulation in patients with movement disorders (Parkinson’s disease).
Schijns, with one of his main focus areas being epilepsy surgery, is honored with his recent appointment: ”Cooperation with European colleagues to ameliorate clinical healthcare and bring innovational research across Europe is the motto. For this reason, we strive as much as possible to develop and share new techniques and knowledge and try to bring the European training of future neurosurgeons in this field to the highest possible level. Of course it is a great honor to be able to give direction to this project also on behalf of the Maastricht UMC+.”

Elisabeth Demmers

UM Regulations for obtaining the doctoral degree – update
|
|
The UM Regulations for obtaining the doctoral degree have been updated. The most important changes are: the valorisation paragraph has been replaced by a so-called ‘impact paragraph’. Also, the University Library offers PhD candidates (voluntary) to do a plagiarism check. Furthermore, on request of the UM Platform Research Ethics and Integrity, after the defense, before receiving the diploma, the PhD candidate is asked to do a pledge to promise to work in accordance with the principles of scientific integrity at all times. For members of the assessment team, an assessment form for the manuscript is introduced. Please find a short summary of the changes here.
The new regulations will be in effect as of 1 October 2020. There is a transition period for PhD defences taking place until 31 December 2020. Have a look at the updated version in English or Dutch.

The WUN Research Development Fund
|
|
The WUN Research Development Fund (RDF) aims to foster research collaborations among academic staff from WUN partner universities. The WUN RDF offers senior and junior researchers at Maastricht University the opportunity to develop research initiatives with colleague researchers from other WUN member universities on issues that are relevant and urgent from the perspective of current global developments. As a European university with a global outlook, the UM invites and supports its researchers to submit ideas and take initiatives that shape our university’s global engagement and to work with colleagues in a truly global network.
Researchers at WUN member institutions, including the UM, can apply for a grant (maximum 10,000 British Pounds) to support a research cooperation with colleagues from at least two other WUN member institutions. In the attachments you will find more details.
Preceding the WUN application procedure we have set up an internal procedure as light as possible to make it easy to submit an idea.
Ideas for a research cooperation with WUN partners for the RDF 2020 round can be submitted internally until Sunday September 20th. From the ideas submitted two will be selected to be developed into full proposals to be submitted to the WUN, before WUN’s deadline of Thursday October 23rd.
WUN welcomes ideas for research collaboration that fit in the Network’s principal research theme of Sustainable Development, particularly for research initiatives that underpin the Sustainable Development Goals: Good health and Wellbeing, Quality Education, Affordable and Clean Energy, Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Climate Action.
An additional focus of this year’s RDF round is Sustainable Recovery. Research ideas addressing one or several of the mentioned themes related to the (consequences of the) Covid 19 pandemic are particularly welcome.

School for Menthal Health and Neuroscience

Anyone planning to submit an application to the NWO-VENI programme in 2021 needs to send a 1-page outline and their CV to the School office (see above) by 30 September 2020. It is also important that you discuss your plans with your line manager and division leader beforehand. This early deadline is necessary because we have to discuss applications in the management board and with the relevant departments and the research office and may have to make an internal pre-selection.

The purpose of the SIRS Research Fund Award is to provide initial research funds for an investigator who has an important idea or hypothesis to test, but no funds to do so. The proposed project must be relevant to improving outcomes of schizophrenia and be applicable to clinical care over the next decade. The project, while preliminary and pilot data that may lead toward applications to larger funding sources, must also be one that is publishable in a peer reviewed journal once the funded period is complete and presented at the annual SIRS congress.
A total of $10,000 is available to support an early career researcher. Early careers researches, which the Society recognizes as a researcher who is less than 40 years of age by April 2021 or within five years post-doc of their terminal degree taking into account career breaks are eligible to apply. Junior investigators from countries with limited resources will be given preference. Only members of SIRS are eligible.

Pélerìn arts-assistenten symposium 2020
|
|
