Message for our UM students

Dear student,
As you may know, critical questions are currently being raised in domestic Dutch politics about the percentage of foreign students at Dutch universities. In this email, we I would like to let you know where the Executive Board (and many others at UM) stand in this debate and how we see the future.
We can sum up our message in culinary terms: Maastricht University without foreign students is like a Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte without cherries, a pizza Margherita without mozzarella or a plate of Chow Mein without noodles. Having the highest percentage of foreign students of any university in the Netherlands, we have been nurturing the diversity of our students for decades. It enriches our education and research climate, adds something essential to the atmosphere in the city and to our economy, now and in the future.
So we are making a strong case, not only here but also to politicians and civil servants in The Hague, in favour of international students at Dutch universities, especially in Maastricht. We wish we could give you more clarity on what that will mean for the future. The Education Minister says he expects to be able to say more about the government’s policy stance on international student recruitment in March. To be continued.
In the meantime, we want you to know that we stand up for our students. We stand up for you.
Warm regards,
Rianne Letschert, Pamela Habibović and Nick Bos Executive Board, Maastricht University
