From 2024, supermarkets in the Netherlands will no longer be allowed to sell tobacco. The number of outlets will then be further scaled down, and ultimately cigarette sales will only be allowed at specialised tobacconists.
This week will see the start of a large-scale study over four years on the implementation and effects of this new legislation. The research will be funded by the Dutch Cancer Society and conducted by a consortium of a unique combination of health scientists (CAPHRI, Research Institute IVO), economists (SEO Amsterdam Economics) and investigative journalists (The Investigative Desk). Project leader is Gera Nagelhout (Promoting Health and Personalised Care).

Cross-border collaboration within the emergency medical service during the COVID-19 pandemic
New research by the International Knowledge and Information Centre on public safety, an Interreg project led by Maastricht University (Health Inequities and Social Participation) and published in Frontiers on Public Health (link to article) has analyzed the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the emergency medical service systems and interhospital transport in the Euregio-Meuse-Rhine.
The results indicate that existing cross-border collaboration in EU border regions has only limited resilience in crisis situations. "The pandemic clearly calls for the improvement of such instruments as well as the political will and understanding to further strengthen cross-border collaboration […] to make the best use of scarce resources based on solidarity and mutual understanding."

Questionnaire: Challenges and trends of SSH research
The 5th Monitoring report on the integration of SSH (Social Sciences and Humanities) in the research framework programme “Horizons 2020” concludes that: All in all the findings of this report are therefore encouraging. The monitoring data indicate strengthening SSH integration. However, levels of integration remain patchy and vary strongly between programme parts, as does the representation of different SSH disciplines. Therefore, a sustained effort to encourage further SSH integration seems called for.
In the light of these findings, and previous to an event dedicated to SSH promotion, evaluation and integration, organized within the French presidency of the EU, we would like to invite you to answer an open questionnaire about some major challenges and trends of SSH research.
