Too much work stress, too little time for family, constantly busy — for many people, this is the daily reality. Last year, Maastricht University alumni Dick and Izabela Bemelmans decided to leave the rat race.
They moved to a secluded spot in the Polish countryside, with the aim of offering guests rest and relaxation and to teach them something about by nature.
“We may be working harder than ever, but we’re more relaxed.”

‘‘How we found (business) opportunities in corona times’’
|
|
Exciting news! Swoop, a Los-Angeles based transportation booking startup, raised no less than $3.2m funding for its seed round last year. With the financial means, the startup has created new platforms (moovsapp.com and swoopapp.com) to help transportation operators increase their network and sales and get through the current corona pandemic.
Ruben Schultz, alumnus of the School of Business and Economics, is co-founder of Swoop. In this interview with SocalTech, Ruben tells you more about how it all started, and what is next for him and the startup.

“It’s easy to underestimate the complexities of living abroad”
|
|
The first time she visited Jordan, UCM alumna Floortje Rawee already loved the country. But she never expected that, by now, she would’ve been calling it home for three years and counting. Her internship at the Dutch embassy in Amman led to a job. She started working at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). She’s still settling into her new job, which may not be what she wants to do forever. “I spend every day in the office.” (Via Observant/Cleo Freriks.)

Alumni donor in the spotlights
Davy Pieters is alumnus of the School of Business and Economics/Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of Maastricht University. What is the story behind his contribution to UM? “I love to see our university actively participating in the development of society. I really want to support this kind of initiatives. (…) Therefore, I donated to scholarships for less advantaged students, a project against loneliness, research into children and healthy food, and an aftercare instrument for recovering COVID-19 patients.’’
Do you also want to contribute to those projects? All donations, large of small, are very welcome! Go to www.umcrowd.nl.

Update: UM alumni needs research
The ambition of the UM Alumni Office has always been to facilitate and stimulate a lifelong bond between alumni and their alma mater. A meaningful and reciprocal bond with our current and future alumni is very important in this respect. That is why we started an extensive research project in 2020 amongst our alumni, in which we tried to uncover their interests, wishes and values.
Currently, we are in the middle of the process of translating the results into a new dynamic strategy for our alumni relations. We expect to provide the first insights in May/June 2021. We will keep you informed.
Dies Natalis speech 2021
Unfortunately the extended lockdown in the Netherlands has forced Maastricht University to adjust the plans for its 45th Dies Natalis. To commemorate the 45th anniversary of our university, Rector Rianne Letschert gave a short speech from the Sint Janskerk. In her speech, the Rector looked back at 2020, but above all looked forward. Themes like blended education, better ways of recognising and rewarding academics, and effective leadership were discussed.

Research: what happens when women enter top leadership?
Boris Lokshin, Associate Professor at the School of Business and Economics, and his colleagues Corinne Post (Lehigh University, USA) and Christophe Boone (University of Antwerp, Belgium) study changes within firms that take place after female executives enter the C-suite. Specifically, they analyse how the thinking of the top management team shifts when women are appointed as leaders.

All UM faculties united in new bachelor's programme
Global Studies — the name of the new Maastricht University bachelor’s programme – sounds perfectly Promethean. Yet the concept makes a lot of sense; indeed, it may well be the most pragmatic approach to preparing students for the 21st century.

Interesting tips for UM alumni

ContinuUM provides access to a piece of UM history
The predecessor of UMagazine is called ContinuUM. This (Dutch) periodical was published approximately 3 times a year between 1997 and 2009. The University Library recently digitised all the issues, which makes the information accessible to everyone. ContinuUM highlights memorable moments in Maastricht University's history, and is thus an important source of information within the heritage of this university.
