It was a shame that our Annual Research Day could not go through on 7 October, but given the necessary national tightening of COVID-19 restrictions we had no other choice. The good news is that we already have a new date, 3 March 2021, and hope to go through with the exciting academic programme on ‘The COVID-19 epidemic: The brain under added pressure'. There is now also increasing research activity within MHeNs on the topic of COVID-19 and its consequences on mental health and brain function, both in those directly affected by the virus and in those who may not be infected but still suffer from the psychosocial consequences. You can find an overview on our website: https://mhens.mumc.maastrichtuniversity.nl/covid-19-research-mhens. One recent example is the Hersenstichting project coordinated by Caroline van Heugten, which was covered by national news programmes last week: https://hersenenzenuwcentrum.mumc.nl/actueel/nieuws/onderzoek-naar-hersenschade-door-het-coronavirus. This project is a nice example of collaboration between MHeNs and the MUMC’s Brain-and-Nerve Centre and other clinical departments, including Radiology, Intensive Care and Internal Medicine. The MHeNs management and the divisional management teams are also constantly looking into ways of facilitating ongoing and new research projects in the current circumstances. It is encouraging to see that much of our research still continues within the new constraints, and we would like to encourage research groups who have concerns about the progress of their work to contact their division leader (PhD students should first approach their supervisor, and then jointly the division leader). We are also happy to be able to offer all divisional seminars online in order to connect researchers within the divisions and across the School. Please check the MHeNs calendar (mhens-calendar@maastrichtuniversity.nl) for up-to-date information about these seminars. With best wishes from the MHeNs management board,
David Linden & Tom van den Crommenacker

The health and well-being of PhD-students and staff at school MHeNs is one of our main concerns, particularly in this intensive COVID-19 period. As you may know, mindfulness meditation is an accessible and effective practice that can induce resilience and provide mental support, also for health workers and other professionals. Based on quite some experience with training comparable groups of individuals at other Dutch medical centers, the organization BFC Compassionate Care and Mindful Medicine (CCMM) organizes a dedicated program for students and staff working in health and life sciences. Beside the opportunity to take part in daily meditations, every two months members will get free access to one hour-long webinars by (inter-)national experts about scientific research into meditation, mindfulness and compassion in Health and Care. These webinars will be alternately provided in Dutch and in English.
Being a mindfulness trainer myself I can really recommend the organizing organization and the international team of trainers behind this initiative. The subscription cost is quite low already, and a small additional discount (5%) is given if an offer code is used (UM_ICC#20). For English speakers the fee is lower because part of the activities is in Dutch only. We trust that choosing for a specific language subscription will be handled with integrity, since this initiative is partly based on voluntary commitment and generosity of the trainers involved. Further introduction to the program can be found on the website of the CCMM, both in Dutch and English.
For more information and to register, please go to the website of BFC. You may also contact me via email.

There are a lot of different signatures in e-mail from colleagues. We’ve contacted our House style coordinator to have a look at it and to formulate a template for us. Logo’s of different institutes can be used in several ways but the signature in e-mails is an exception on this. There we may only use the logo combination UM-MUMC. Of course you may mention the name of the institute and eventually other cooperating partners but without the logo. Otherwise it can be very confusing for the recipient of the e-mail.
That is why we present you the standard template for your UM signature with the fixed layout/order which applies in all UM signatures.

Machteld Marcelis appointed to a chair in Transdiagnostic Psychiatry
|
|
Machteld Marcelis has been appointed to a chair in Transdiagnostic Psychiatry (Transdiagnostiek in de Psychiatrie) in the department Psychiatry and Neuropsychology on 1 October 2020. This chair has been established as part of the academic collaboration between GGzE, a large provider of mental health services in the Eindhoven area, and UM. Building on her longstanding collaborations within division 2 of MHeNs, Prof Marcelis will focus on the improvement of early diagnosis and intervention strategies for mental illness, using transdiagnostic methodology. This will entail a combination of research into psychosocial mechanisms of mental illness and the development of innovative technologies for personalised diagnosis and therapy.
We congratulate Prof Marcelis on this appointment and wish her success for her work within the Department, Division and School.
