Join the CAPHRI-chs collaboration!
CAPHRI and the Centre for Health and Society (chs, Heinrich-Heine-University, Düsseldorf, Germany) are geographically related and have many common interests in research and education in the field of health, care, public health and society. Therefore, CAPHRI and chs have joined forces within the framework of a formal collaboration agreement, which was signed during the first successful CAPHRI-chs Collaboration Day on 22 September.
Areas of collaboration The current and potential future areas of collaboration include: - Co-investigation in research projects (jointly funded or based on existing internal funding) - Co-authorship of research papers - Exchange of Master’s students for scientific internships and theses (including medical students from Maastricht doing their Wetenschapsparticipatie, WESP) - Exchange of teachers and teaching activities, including post-graduate teaching courses - Joint / bi-national PhD education - Collaboration in international networks
Working groups At the moment there are six working groups around common themes of research and education, who are exploring collaborative projects and initiatives: - Ageing and long-term care - Ethics and society - Health promotion - Health technology assessment and health economic evaluation - MSc and PhD education - Primary care and health services research
Would you like to join one of the working groups? Then please contact the chair(s) of the working group(s) you are interested in (see this website for contact details of the chairs). All groups are planning to have a follow-up meeting early 2022 to further discuss their planned activities.

CAPHRI Societal Impact Team Award for research on COVID-19 in nursing homes
The team that investigates COVID-19 in nursing homes (Ageing and Long-Term Care) received the CAPHRI Societal Impact Team Award for the great national and international impact their research has had on the well-being of nursing home residents. Thanks to the recommendations from their study, Dutch nursing homes reopened at the end of May 2020 after being closed to visitors for almost two months. If all goes well, their doors won’t close again – even in the next wave.
Ramona Backhaus, one of the reseachers, was interviewed about the study. Read the interview here.

Niels Stensen Fellowship for Alena Kamenshchikova
Alena Kamenshchikova (Health Inequities and Societal Participation) has been awarded a Niels Stensen Fellowship, which will allow her to conduct research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine into cross-border infectious disease control between the UK and the EU. Earlier Alena and her colleagues studied the way Euregional public health professionals in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands tried to control COVID-19, despite different policies in those three countries. Because the lives of people in a Euregion do not stop at a national border. Neither do viruses.

Healthcare for undocumented migrants
In many countries, undocumented migrants have no or little access to healthcare. Yet such access is essential, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when vaccination is crucial. Politics and policy should be separate, Milena Pavlova (Creating Value-Based Health Care) argues. Who can enter and stay in a country is a question for politics. Policy must ensure that everyone can access adequate healthcare. Together with her master’s students, Milena Pavlova is investigating the access to healthcare of undocumented migrants.

Tobacco discouragement is only effective from €12 per cigarette pack
The only way to get enough people to quit smoking to achieve the goals of the National Prevention Agreement is to substantially increase the excise duty on tobacco products. Cigarettes would need to cost at least €12 per pack to entice 10% of smokers to quit. Some 50% of smokers say they would only quit at a price of €60 per pack. These are the conclusions of research by Cloé Geboers and colleagues (Promoting Health and Personalised Care) on the price sensitivity of people who smoke cigarettes or rolling tobacco. The findings were published in the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research and received a lot of media attention, e.g. by newspaper Trouw.

Fewer patients visited GP due to asthma or COPD during the covid-19 pandemic
Since the start of the corona pandemic in March 2020, the use of general practitioner care by patients due to asthma or COPD has been persistently lower than in 2019, the year before the corona pandemic. Patients who did seek contact with their GP or out-of-hours GP were helped relatively more often by telephone. Moreover, the proportion of physical consultations actually decreased. This is in line with the advice to provide remote care where possible. These are the findings of a study by Jean Muris (Optimising Patient Care) and colleagues in collaboration with UMC Groningen and Radboudumc.
