National Survey on Research Integrity
As you likely know, Maastricht UMC+/FHML supports the National Survey on Research Integrity (NSRI). The NSRI is a survey intended to gather information about the way we conduct our research across all disciplines and all academic ranks, gathering information on topics such as open science, peer review, competitiveness, trust in published studies, work pressure, questionable and responsible research practices.
All academic researchers in the Netherlands (spending at least 8 hours per week on research tasks) should have received an invitation to this survey by email. In case you have missed it, please check your spam folder or search for an email from the following address (Kantar Public): webint@tns-nipo.com. In case you still cannot locate the survey, please ask for a new invitation at info@nsri2020.nl.
Because the way we practice research is important to us all, we would like to ask you to please take 20-25 minutes over the next week to complete the survey.
You may follow updates on Twitter (@SurveyIntegrity) and visit the NSRI website for more information and results.
Thank you in advance for joining the survey.

NWO Team Synergy Award
Scientific impact matters Young researchers often are at the forefront of scientific innovation, but don’t always have the time, network or financial means to translate those innovative insights into societal impact. NWO offers a helping hand. Each year, NWO hands out the Synergy Award for the most enticing, daring or compelling societal impact idea in the Social Sciences and the Humanities. Are you a PhD-candidate, or have you recently attained your PhD degree? And do you think your research can positively impact society? Then sign up before November 16th!
“It took my scientific experience to a much higher level” Daudi van Veen and Tessa van de Rozenberg (Leiden University) took part in the previous Synergy Award and won the finale. Tessa urges all PhD students to take part. “It boosted my motivation for my own PhD research and gave me an opportunity to fine-tune the impact of my research. The pitch training session, preparing my speech: it was intensive, exciting and, above all, a valuable experience.” Tessa and Daudi won the finale with their strategy for introducing more diversity into school textbooks (Ethnicity and Gender in Schoolbooks). “It’s great to be given an opportunity to do something practical with your research. Distinctly nerve-racking, but also really interesting to hear what other people think of it. It took my scientific experience to a much higher level,” says Daudi.
About the Award With the Synergy Award, NWO offers PhD candidate a head start in employing their research ideas for a better society. Four candidates will be offered the opportunity to further enhance their communicative skills during an intensive workshop. The four candidates will then pitch their idea during the online edition of Synergy ’21, on February 4th 2021. Both a jury and the public will vote for the most enticing and impressive idea. The winner will receive a prize of €2.500 and will get the opportunity to present their progress during Synergy ‘22.

RHAPSODY – Online training on Young-onset dementia
The European RHAPSODY project led to the development of an eHealth information and skill-building program for informal caregivers of people with young-onset dementia (<65 years) in French, German, English, and Portugese.
By means of a ZonMw VIMP grant we developed the Dutch version, ‘’Online training Dementie op Jonge Leeftijd’’. This was a joint effort from Alzheimer Centrum Limburg, Alzheimer Nederland, Radboudumc Alzheimer centrum, UKON, Kenniscentrum Dementie op Jonge Leeftijd.
The Online training includes video presentations, animations, textual background information, practical tips, stories of informal caregivers and reflection questions. Various topics are discussed, such as problems with daily activities, changes in mood, influence on the family, and coping with the emotional impact of the situation. Finally, an overview is provided of the available help and support for young people with dementia and their informal caregivers in the Netherlands. At the moment we are running the feasibility study.

Postdoctoral researcher for the University Eye Clinic Maastricht
Postdoctoral researcher for the University Eye Clinic Maastricht (cell biology, biochemistry or related field) to develop new, personalized treatments for glaucoma.
The eye disorder glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. Vision loss results from degeneration of the optic nerve and loss of retinal ganglion cells, the specialized retinal neurons that transmit the visual information from the eye to the brain. Current state-of-the-art treatments often fail to halt the disease. While the pathophysiology is not known in detail, glaucoma certainly is a heterogeneous disorder. Thus, it is required to characterize patients extensively and to diversify and personalize the treatment.

Alzheimer Centrum Limburg (Div. 1) at Alzheimer Europe Conference 2020
A few weeks ago, several researchers from Alzheimer Centrum Limburg (ACL, MHeNs’ Div. 1) presented their work during this year’s virtual Alzheimer Europe Conference. The conference was attended by around 800 delegates, including people living with dementia, informal caregivers, policymakers and researchers. Golnaz Atefi, Dr. Sara Bartels, Dr. Lizzy Boots, Jeroen Bruinsma, Dr. Hannah Christie, Dr. Fania Dassen, Anouk Geraets, Iris Linden, Dr. Kirsten Peetoom, Mignon Schichel, Dr. Pieter Jelle Visser and ACL-Directors Professor Frans Verhey and Professor Marjolein de Vugt attended and presented posters, pre-recorded oral presentations, or live presentations via Zoom. Despite not being able to exchange ideas in person and socialise in between sessions, it was a great experience being once again well represented with several different research themes of the ACL. The online event also had benefits: there were even delegates from Israel and Australia, several parts of the program could be watched (and paused) on-demand, and delegates have the chance to re-watch recordings from the entire event in the online conference platform. We are looking forward to attending next year’s edition, hopefully in person, planned in Bucharest, Romania.
