Save the date: CAPHRI Research Day 2021
On Tuesday 23 November, our annual CAPHRI Research Day will take place at Chateau St. Gerlach in Valkenburg. We are looking forward to meeting you all, during interesting plenaries and high-quality workshops. This year's theme is 'A healthy society for everyone'. At the moment we are finalising the programme. Registration will open soon!
Outline of this year's theme 'A healthy society for everyone':
Health disparities Everyone has the right to good health, adequate health care, a good quality of life, and full participation in society, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, disability status, and cultural background. But the health disparities that exist in society show that we’ve still got a long way to go to achieve our vision. How can we do something about this? This question is what a lot of CAPHRI research is about.
Research methodologies To reduce existing health disparities and provide everyone with the health care they need, our research must take biological, sociocultural, and societal differences into account. How can we include everyone in your research? And how can we make sure that our research results will benefit the various subgroups of society?
How is CAPHRI doing in terms of diversity and inclusion in the workplace? Do our staff members feel like they belong? Does everyone have equal opportunities? Join our discussion!

Involving patients with multimorbidity and limited health literacy in decision-making
Shared decision making (SDM) has been developed as models for patients and care providers to jointly make decisions on what is best for the patient. However, most models are based on ‘cure’ situations in hospital settings, and fall short in the complex care situations often encountered in general practice. For example, exploring goals and preferences is crucial but challenging for many patients with multimorbidity and limited health literacy (LHL) and their GPs.
Jany Rademakers, Trudy van der Weijden, Jesse Jansen (Promoting Health and Personalised Care) and colleagues have been awarded a ZonMw grant (€ 483.375) to co-create a new tool/strategy to support effective implementation of SDM in general practice for patients with multimorbidity and LHL. Other partners involved in the study are Nivel, Netherlands Patient Federation and the Dutch College of General Practitioners.

Personal grant for Judith Meijers
ZonMW awarded a personal research grant for talented nurses with a PhD to Judith Meijers (Ageing and Long-Term Care). With this grant Judith can further expand her research line and conduct research into palliative care in the coming 4 years. The main focus of her research is 'Advanced Care Planning', the process in which elderly enter into a dialogue with their relatives and care providers in order to record well-considered wishes and decisions about the end of life.

Talking about chronic pain and rehabilitation: Challenges for patients and practitioners
If patients with chronic pain experience that their pain strongly interferes with their daily life activities, their general practitioner or a medical specialist may refer them to a chronic pain rehabilitation centre. There, interdisciplinary teams of healthcare professionals aim to guide patients in exploring how they can deal with their pain differently, in order to improve their functioning and quality of life. However, a recent study by Stinesen, Sneijder and Smeets (Functioning, Participation and Rehabilitation), shows that conversations between patients and their healthcare professionals about pain and disability can be challenging.

Brocher research residency for Klasien Horstman
Klasien Horstman (Health Inequities and Societal Participation) was selected for a 1-month research residency at the Brocher Foundation near Geneva, Swiss. The mission of the Brocher Foundation is to host researchers from all over the world who dedicate their work to ethical, legal and social aspects of biomedicine and public health. It offers visiting researchers the opportunity to write a book - articles - an essay or a PhD thesis in a peaceful environment that stimulates concentration and encourages conviviality and information exchanges between the researchers. During her stay in the fantastic environment of the Brocher Villa at the lake of Geneva Klasien worked on a book about the ‘’knowledge politics of public health”: how do norms about ‘’good knowledge’’ and ‘’good participation’’ construct health practices and health inequalities?

Interactive lecture: Training in guideline development: a double-edged sword?
Health professionals’ knowledge of cost-conscious practices remains limited. Clinical guidelines aim to guide the decision process, influencing both the quality and cost-effectiveness of healthcare. Involving professionals in the guideline development process could increase their motivation and competence in using guidelines appropriately.
The international consortium CoCoCare (Creating Value-Based Healthcare) is working on training about guideline development for different groups of health professionals in the Netherlands. In this online lunchtime talk, the CoCoCare researchers will further explain their ideas and raise issues for discussion.
Date and time: Tuesday 5 October, 12.00-13.00 PM Registration: before 21 September at secretariaat-educ@maastrichtuniversity.nl or h.sijen@maastrichtuniversity.nl
