Get active in spring! Join the UM steps challenge

We can all use some extra exercise these days. All this studying from home is making us sit far too much. And that’s not good for our vitality and health. That is why we want to get UM moving again with the ‘Get active in spring!’ challenge!
Here is how it works:
The teams
Together with the other students from your faculty, you can compete for the title of UM's most active faculty or service centre*! If you study at more than one faculty, you decide which faculty you want to join. UM employees are also invited to take part in the challenge, so the employees from your faculty will be part of your team as well.
* Some UM employees work at service centres, not at faculties.
The challenge
The challenge starts on 15 April and ends 5 May. The goal is to take as many steps as possible. The first team that reaches 178.500 steps per person on average, wins the challenge. You should be able to finish within 3 weeks if everyone takes an average of 8.500 steps a day. The average steps of the entire team are calculated daily, so everyone contributes: the relaxed forest walker as well as the avid marathon runner! Of course, it is most fun to go outside, but the steps you take indoors also count. So even the steps from walking up and down the stairs at home, using the vacuum cleaner or doing a home workout – as long as your pedometer registers it!
The winner
The winner of the ‘Get active in spring!’ challenge is the first faculty or service centre to reach 178.500 steps on average per participant. Besides this honourable title, the top three teams also receive a sum of money to spend on vitality promotion within their faculty/service centre.
Selfcare app
For this challenge, we will be using the platform from Selfcare. If you take part in the challenge, Selfcare will give you extensive instructions on how to download and use this app. Please note: do not create an account yet, but wait for the invitation by e-mail from Selfcare so that your account can be linked to UM. Your steps are counted in the app by linking your pedometer, smartwatch or smartphone to the Selfcare platform. You are the only one who can see your individual steps; in the challenge, only the average steps of your faculty are made public.
Do you accept this challenge?
Then sign up no later than 8 April 2021. On this special intranet page, you can ask questions and stay updated on the scores and informative videos. After the registration deadline, Selfcare will send you an invitation to create an account to use the app. Participation is free of charge.
If you sign up for this challenge, you can also take part in a second steps challenge within your own faculty in June. You will then compete with your study programme against the other study programmes within your faculty.
Become an ambassador
Are you confident in your faculty/service centre, and do you think you can motivate your team to go the extra mile? Then indicate on the form that you would like to become an ambassador. If you are chosen as an ambassador, you will receive further information about this and you will be given special authorizations in the app to be able to motivate your team.
The Get active in spring! challenge is organised by Arbo-HR, UM SPORTS, the department of Health Promotion and the SSC.
