Message from the Management Board
|
|
Dear colleagues,
The last weeks have seen an unprecedented change in our daily working and the way in which we approach research, teaching and clinical care, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the necessary public health and safety measures. First of all, I would like to thank all our colleagues who are active in clinical care at MUMC and other national and international healthcare providers for their crucial and tireless efforts in looking after the vulnerable and ill and keeping all of us safe and healthy. Great thanks must also go to all of you who managed in a very short time span to setup distance teaching programmes and making the transition as smooth as possible for our students. Finally, many of you have been very active in adapting our research to the new requirements. This posed challenges both for the laboratories and for patient studies, which were managed well through the concerted efforts of many of you. The Management Board wishes to express special thanks to every one of you. This successful transition would not have been possible without the great commitment of the members of the support staff, including technicians, secretaries, IT managers, research coordinators, and the finance and administration teams.
While we are adjusting to the new situation the School will help you as much as we can with your ongoing tasks - whether this concerns grant applications, finalising papers and theses, planning new projects or managing existing ones. Some of you have also started research into COVID-19, for example on its psychological consequences, which is very timely, and again we are keen to support such ideas. Although the central office is now working remotely we are not anticipating any disruptions of our work and thus feel free to approach us with any queries. We would also like to remind you to check regularly for updates from the UM, FHML and MUMC boards in relation to your obligations under the new regulations.
Best wishes, on behalf of the Management Board, David and Tom

Grants that are submitted for sign-off close to the deadline cause administrative problems and cannot be properly scrutinized internally. The MHENs policy for grant submissions is:
- Applications should be sent in due time to the administrative team for budget calculations and other administrative issues (at least 6 weeks before deadline).
- The application should be discussed with the head of department and division leader (and ideally be read and commented on by other colleagues as well) and then sent to the MHeNs secretariat at least 6 weeks before the deadlines so that an internal peer review (IPR) can be carried out. This will be done by scientific director, division leaders and deputies and other senior academics with the aim of providing helpful feedback to applicants, strengthening applications and increasing their success rates.
- This policy generally also applies to consortium applications not led from Maastricht although we may waive IPR if this has been conducted at the coordinating institution.
- If these deadlines cannot be met because of exceptional circumstances (e.g. funding calls with tight deadlines) MHeNs will still endeavor to submit the applications but generally the aim should be to allow for sufficient time for IPR.

CIN PhD Matching Fund Grant - NEW DEADLINE

The CIN at Maastricht University serves as a virtual overarching umbrella, linking research activities using neuroscience methods in order to improve the visibility of UM’s neuroscience research excellence. In order to foster interfaculty cooperation in this field, the CIN launches an annual call for two joint CIN PhD projects.
The deadline for submitting an application is 31 March 2020, 23:59 hours. Please send your application, using the attached application form format, to Marie-Thérèse Moers. Email: CIN@maastrichtuniversity.nl; Phone: 043-3881021.

For all microscopy researchers who are currently working from home, we launched the Huygens@Home initiative to help them continue their image processing at home.
All researchers/students who need to do microscopy image processing at home and have no or limited access to the workstations/servers at the University: they are more than welcome to contact me directly at remko@svi.nl to get a free personal Huygens@Home license for the time being.
Some researchers from Maastricht have already requested such a license, so that is great!
