Looking back, moving forward

Time has swiftly passed, and 2024 is just around the corner! It has certainly been an eventful year from a SHE perspective. In my end-of-year reflection for 2022, I anticipated numerous opportunities and developments for learning and adaptation in the future – a prediction that has certainly proven true for 2023.
It has been a pleasure to welcome many new members to the SHE Community, both locally and (inter)nationally. PhDs and postdocs have embarked on exciting new research projects. New assistant professors and full professors have joined us and are navigating their transition into the domain of health professions education. You have been updated on this through our Newsletters, website and rapidly expanding LinkedIn platform. Additionally, early 2023 marked the retirement, farewell symposia and reception of well-deserved accolades for Prof. dr. Cees van der Vleuten and Prof. dr. Jeroen van Merriënboer. Sadly, Jeroen passed away in November. A profound personal loss for many of us and a significant loss for the field of educational sciences, as he was an innovative and highly influential scholar.
For the new year, I look forward to activities aligned with SHE’s recently launched Research Program 2024-2030, to an increased focus on our community building activities and to collaborative efforts to ensure healthcare professionals are well educated and in the best position to contribute to high-quality care. In this December issue of SHE Communicates, we look back to some of the highlights of 2023 and provide a glimpse into what 2024 holds in store. Enjoy reading it, and may you have a joyous holiday season!

SHE launches its Research Program 2024-2030
|
|
It’s here, it’s short, it’s what you need to know about our research! The SHE Research Program 2024-2030 is now accessible. Aligned with SHE’s vision and mission, and building on our robust history of world-leading research in health professions education, we embarked on a collaborative process to construct our forthcoming Research Program.
The outcome is a succinct description of what we consider to be the main aims for the future of health professions education. In pursuit of these objectives, our focus lies in integrating scientific insights from diverse research themes and disciplines.
You'll easily remember our three aims, forming the memorable acronym H-P-E:
- Healthcare environments that foster learning
- Professionals that are sustainably competent
- Education that is designed for context

Writing a PhD Research Proposal
|
|
|
The successful SHE course Writing a PhD Research Proposal has been renewed and improved and will run as of March 2024.
During the on-campus course week, we will give more attention to community building, getting acquainted with health professions education and the SHE research school, and selecting an appropriate methodological approach to answer your research questions. The course week will be followed by a – partly elective – set of online workshops and consultation meetings.
A second visit to Maastricht will be optional. At the end of the course, you can present your research plans either on campus or online in a hybrid SHE Presents session. The aim of the course remains the same: writing a high-quality PhD research proposal – under intensive and personalized guidance of two SHE experts – that may give you access to our PhD program!

Looking back at the Interreg projects Skills4You and COMPAS
|
|
Since mid-2021, several SHE staff members have been involved in two cross-border projects that were co-funded by Interreg and the regional province of Limburg. These projects are now coming to an end. A commonality in both projects is that they both produced tools to constructively cope with differences. We worked with partners just over the border in Germany and Belgium in the Eurogio Meus-Rhein.
Read here a reflection and conclusion of both projects.

Our SHE Collaborates team wishes all their project partners and the broader SHE Community a joyous holiday season and health & happiness to you and yours in the new year ahead. Please find in this newsletter an impression of two of our current project collaborations in Kenya and Portugal. See you next year!
Emmaline Brouwer, SHE Collaborates director
In October 2023, the team at North Coast Medical Training College (NCMTC) conducted a training for the East and South African College of Nursing and Midwifery (ECSACONM), as conclusion to their 'Train the Facilitator' course in Health Professions Education, supported by SHE Collaborates and Carol Nyambura, our sister-trainer in Kenya.
During this 1-year project, we built on extended prior collaborates with NCMTC, in which we developed and implemented 'Enabling Learning' courses at different levels and now also in a one-week executive course, facilitated by trainers from NCMTC and Pwani University. Health Profession trainers from Kenya, Tanzania, Seychelles, Rwanda, Mauritius, eSwatini, Botswana and Uganda described the course as 'mind blowing' and 'life changing'!
Congratulations to the NCMTC team!
In November 2023, SHE consultant Prof. Piet Leroy (Pediatric Critical Care Specialist and Medical Educationalist at MUMC+), returned to Católica Medical School in Sintra/Lisbon in Portugal. During this five-day visit, he facilitated a workshop on “Teaching effectively, considering cognitive load” and on “Feedback, particularly, in the context of assessment and mentoring” for block coordinators, tutors, lecturers, mentors and other staff. He also shared his insights with the UCP team on the ongoing development of their new medical curriculum as SHE continues its contribution to the capacity building and curriculum implementation at Católica Medical School.
