Care for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in dementia patients needs to improve!
|
|
Sjacko Sobczak works as a psychiatrist in elderly care at Mondriaan and as a senior researcher at MHeNs. Her main focus as a psychiatrist is consulting in several regional nursing homes.
Together with other researchers she set up the TRauma And DEmentia (TRADE)-project in order to improve care for subjects with dementia and suffering from comorbid PTSD.
‘The TRADE-project is born in practice. I saw that problem behavior was common in people with a traumatic life report’.

MHeNs and society: services offered by University Fund Limburg/SWOL
|
|
Researchers are more and more searching for a connection with private partners in order to reinforce and fund their projects. University Fund Limburg/SWOL (UFL) could help in achieving this. UFL aims to support academic research and education at Maastricht University. In addition, the Fund also seeks to foster a good and mutually beneficial relationship between the university and the community.
As UM’s charitable foundation, UFL serves as an important vehicle to develop external partnerships in order to realise innovative research projects, endowed chairs, scholarships and more. In general, the Fund provides the following services to UM researchers:
- NAMED FUND
UFL offers UM academics the opportunity to save external capital in a Named Fund. In a Named Fund, external funding is administered for a specific goal or project. The donation can be done with tax incentives. UFL carries out the administrative control and invests this capital on a defensive, sustainable way. For more information click here.
- GRANTS
UFL awards grants to academic and student projects to enhance research and education at UM. Will you organise a congress in the future or do you have a great research project or initiative? If so, perhaps the Fund can help you to realise your idea. The Fund rewards approximately 80 grants every year (3 application deadlines). For more information click here.
- CROWDFUNDING
Are you interested in innovative and active ways of raising funds for your project? The UFL has a crowdfunding platform, on which it features concrete and appealing projects in order to target a particular ‘crowd’ and attempts to realise the desired target amount. UFL assists the researcher with developing and executing the campaign. All crowdfunding campaigns are featured on this website. More information about crowdfunding can be found here.
UFL has years of experience in development and fundraising, marketing & communications, community building and alumni relations. In addition, it maintains a large (regional) network. Do you want more information about the possibilities for your project? Please contact UFL via info@ufl-swol.nl.

PhD defences will continue to take place online
|
|
As previously announced, all meetings at UM will continue to take place online until the date in which the form and scope of the current lockdown measures are modified by the government. This means that all academic ceremonies, including PhD defences, will continue to be held online until that date. Though for the past two months, we have been offering the possibility to postpone PhD defences until a date in which meetings are again allowed to take place on-site, this exception will no longer apply as of 2 March. The reasons for this are explained below.
We see a need for clarity regarding the options for PhD defences: online, on-site or hybrid. We also realise that it is undesirable to all parties involved for there to be a long period of time between the approval of the manuscript and the actual defence. This would mean, for instance, that both PhD candidates and members of the assessment committee have to immerse themselves in the material again after a long break. In addition, there is a real chance that a major backlog of PhD defences will develop, which would entail organisational risks.
For these reasons, we are forced to stop offering the possibility of postponing PhD defences. We sincerely regret the need to do this because we would like for all of our PhD candidates to have a festive defence ceremony in the presence of their family and friends. Along with you, we hope that this possibility will return as soon as possible.
What does the decision mean in concrete terms?
- For all PhD defences scheduled on or after 2 March 2021, it will no longer be possible to postpone the date once it has been set.
- From the same date, 2 March 2021, it is mandatory that the PhD defence takes place no later than six months after approval of the manuscript by the assessment committee. This rule will remain in force after the corona crisis.
- If your manuscript was approved before 2 March 2021 and you have not yet set a date for your defence, your defence must take place no later than 2 September 2021 (i.e., six months after 2 March).
- If your manuscript has been approved for some time but you have not yet set a date, plan a date soon.
Once again, it is not easy for us to take this decision and we ask for your understanding of the considerable reasons that make this necessary.

Anna Schueth, Illuminating the unseen with novel 3D microscopy technology
|
|
Anna Schueth (Department of Cognitive Neuroscience, Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience) is a post-doctoral researcher, who recently received a NWO VENI grant to further develop and apply her ground-breaking, light-sheet microscope prototype, which she co-developed and set up in the lab at Maastricht University. "When I first built it in the lab at MHeNs, it was the first prototype worldwide and now, 3 or 4 exist in the world", says Schueth. Maastricht University is fortunate to have this cutting-edge microscope and to apply this novel 3D imaging technology to various human and rodent tissue samples. "I am very proud to have received the only NWO grant in the Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES) domain at Maastricht University this year and I strongly believe that technological advances are vital for UM and its many different research projects".
