On 15 July Maria Jansen, emeritus professor of Population-Focused Health Policy, gave her farewell lecture. For many years she has worked to promote health policy with a closer alignment between research and practice. 16 years ago Maria Jansen founded the Living Lab Public Health Limburg (AWPG), a partnership between UM, GGD Zuid-Limburg and the municipalities in the region. Now that Maria retired, a team consisting of Christian Hoebe, Rianne Reijs, Mandy Leurs-Stijnen, Nicole Dukers-Muijrers, Brigitte van der Zanden en Ymke Evers (Health Inequities and Societal Participation/ GGD Zuid-Limburg) will continue the work of the Living Lab.

With deep sadness, we learned of the death of our highly valued colleague Ruud Kempen, emeritus professor Social Gerontology. Ruud is the founder of social gerontology at Maastricht University. He stood at the cradle of scientific research into care of older people at our university and was a pillar of the Living Lab in Ageing and Long-Term Care Limburg.

Preuvenemint event 2022: Knowledge and innovation for a healthy region
|
|
This year's network meeting during the Preuvenemint (an annual food festival in Maastricht) was devoted to the Knowledge and Innovation Agenda Southeast Netherlands 2030. Numerous partners were represented during the event, from governments and health insurers to knowledge and healthcare institutions. CAPHRI professors Klasien Horstman, Maria Jansen, Aggie Paulus and Hilde Verbeek gave a presentation.

Children from poorer families live shorter and less healthy (and the Dutch government is not adressing this well)
|
|
Stress over high energy and grocery costs has a direct effect on the health of people who already have little to spend, warns Gera Nagelhout (Promoting Health and Personalised Care) in the newspaper Algemeen Dagblad. According to her, the government can do more to remedy that problem. This is important, because children from underprivileged families in our country live on average fifteen years shorter in good health.

Looking back: Inaugural lecture Milena Pavlova
|
|
On 14 July Milena Pavlova gave her inaugural lecture titled 'Towards robust and fair global health systems: old challenges in new realities'. Milena is professor of Health Economics and Equity (Creating Value-Based Health Care). Her research focuses on fostering the equity insights into the health economics field, including the appraisal of decision-making behind the allocation of healthcare resources, services and products. She also adds to the international orientation of CAPHRI, by exploring accessibility and affordability problems in the health systems of high- and low-income countries.

Looking back: Valedictory lecture Wybo Dondorp

On 1 September Wybo Dondorp, emeritus professor Significance for the Humanistic Perspective for the Ethics of Human Reproductive Genetics, gave his valedictory lecture. The title of the lecture was 'Respect voor toekomstige personen. Humanisme en reprogenetics' (in Dutch).

Introduction MUMC+ Comprehensive Cancer Centre

The Maastricht UMC+ Comprehensive Cancer Center (MCCC) is one of three Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the Netherlands and the first UMC in the Netherlands to be officially recognized as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) for over a year now. The MCCC consists of the Maastricht UMC+ Oncology Centre and GROW research institute.
