Kootstra Talent Fellowship for Casper Webers
Casper Webers (Functioning, Participation and Rehabilitation) has been awarded a Kootstra Talent Fellowship (KTF). Casper will investigate residual symptoms in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), a rheumatic disorder of the spine. Residual symptoms are symptoms that are still present, despite having achieved remission. Large-scale study of sustainable employability of firefighters
The work of fire department employees is recognized as having high physical, mental and emotional demands. This therefore raises the question of how men and women in the repressive fire department function can be employed in a sustainable way, how they can continue to perform their work throughout their career while maintaining good health, well-being and productivity? With a large-scale survey of over 25,000 firefighters, IJmert Kant, Nicole Jansen and their team (Functioning, Participation and Rehabilitation) are investigating what are impeding and promoting factors.

Better rehabilitation for people with long-term corona complaints
More than 200,000 people in the Netherlands have persistent complaints after a COVID-19 infection. They rely on rehabilitation but its effectiveness is unknown. Moreover, patients are confronted with fragmentation in care lacking coordination and coherence. The PINCOR study will be studying the effect of a person-centered, integrated approach for recovery of COVID-19 with coordination and cooperation of all disciplines involved within a Regional COVID-19 rehabilitation network. The project is a collaboration between Optimising Patient Care (Jean Muris et al.), Promoting Health and Personalised Care (Jako Burgers et al.) and Functioning, Participation and Rehabilitation (Jeanine Verbunt et al.).

OAinject: Fighting osteoarthritis
CAPHRI is part of the OAinject consortium that aims to develop new diagnostic tools in order to offer more accurate individualised treatments for osteoarthritis patients. The researchers will also work on innovative ways of gradually administering drugs locally over a extended period of time via an injectable drug depot in the diseased joint. Tim Welting and Pieter Emans (Functioning, Participation and Rehabilitation) are co-initiators. The project is funded by the Perspectief programme of the Dutch Research Council (NWO).

Best practice project on childhood fever and antibiotic prescription
Fever is the most common reason for a child to be taken to a general practitioner (GP). One in three to four children subsequently receive an antibiotic prescription. Most often, this is unnecessary and not recommended in guidelines. The booklet 'My child has a fever', developed by Eefje de Bont (Optimising Patient Care) leads to fewer antibiotic prescriptions. Her project was selected as one of the best practice examples from ZonMw's Good Use of Medicines programme.
An interview with her was published in the digital magazine '10 jaar GGG'. Read it here (Dutch only).

Energy transition for all? A third of the world's population still cooks on open fires
One third of the world's population cooks on biomass or other polluting fuels. Every year, 3.2 million people die from inhaling smoke released by open fires. Cooking on open fires also has a major impact on the climate: it is the cause of as much as 2% of CO2 emissions. That is as much as emissions from aviation. Yet, the implementation of cleaner cookstoves and fuels is not a given. In a new study, PhD candidate Esther Boudewijns (Optimising Patient Care) is therefore developing two practical tools that should improve the implementation of cleaner cooking. The results of the research were published in The Lancet Planetary Health.

Looking back: LolaHESG conference and launch MaastrichtHETA
The lolaHESG (Low Lands Health Economics Study Group) conference organized by Maastricht University (Chair: Dr Mickael Hiligsmann) at the Castle Vaeshartelt on 19-20 May was a great success with more than 115 participants from the Netherlands and beyond. A total of 40 research papers were extensively discussed and a plenary session was given by Prof Iwan van der Horst (MUMC+), chairman of the executive board of the Dutch association of Intensive Care on “leadership in times of covid-19”.
During the conference, the health economics/HTA researchers from the department of Health Services Research (UM) and from the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Medical technology Assessment (MUMC) were pleased to launch the “Maastricht Health Economics and Technology Assessment” (MaastrichtHETA). MaastrichtHETA develops and disseminates innovative methodology and knowledge for advancing, promoting and teaching best practices in health economics and health technology assessment.

Join the CAPHRI Seminar Group or become one of our Social Media Liaisons
We are committed to building our CAPHRI community. For this we need your help. We are looking for members for our CAPHRI Seminar Group and CAPHRI Social Media Liaisons.
CAPHRI Seminar Group We would like to organise (more) meetings on specific themes that are open to all CAPHRI staff members, such as lunch seminars, research presentations, invited guest lectures or masterclasses. These seminars will be the forum for presenting the work of both CAPHRI members and guest speakers. They will be organised in addition to the meetings that are already organised by and for our PhD candidates. The group will be supported by CAPHRI’s Communications Officer and secretary. We are looking for one member per research line.
CAPHRI Social Media Liaisons CAPHRI is active on a variety of social media platforms. We use social media to engage the public, communicate research and enhance CAPHRI’s profile online. We are always eager to hear about the latest news and developments within our research lines. Therefore we are looking for liaisons between our research lines and CAPHRI’s Communications Officer. The liaisons informes the Communications Officer about important projects that have been completed, upcoming events, if a staff member is going to be in the news, etc.. This way we can bring even more CAPHRI research and news to the attention of our CAPHRI community and a broader public. We are looking for one liaison per research line.
Would you like to get involved in the Seminar Group or become one of our Social Media Liaisons? The two positions can also be combined. Please contact CAPHRI’s Communications Officer Hanneke Trines: hanneke.trines@maastrichtuniversity.nl
