SHE is @ Home
And home is where our hearts are

Business as usual is now, due to COVID-19, being performed at home. Although we stay connected we had the idea for a special edition of the SHE Communicates to reach out to everyone from our home offices and to wish you Stay Safe!

COVID-19
I want to confess that I have underestimated this Corona crisis from the start. I went to the Ottawa Conference in Kuala Lumpur and was talking to my clinical colleagues about the exaggeration of the virus for our health. I have never been more wrong, and I apologize for that. This is one of the biggest crises in the world outside being in a war zone.

Cees’ message to all of you

Dear all,

Corona makes us stay at home

Corona sometimes makes us sad

Corona also makes us take care of each other

Corona is worldwide and so is SHE

SHE will always be there for you and available at any time, through e-mail of course. However, you can count on us. If you have any questions, if you feel down or sad, please feel free to contact us, even for some small talk. Don’t let this virus get to you, stay strong and hang in there. You have my e-mail and don’t hesitate to use it.

Best wishes and stay healthy, always look on the bright side of life..... Lilian Swaen (and Nicky and Hennie)

Nothing will change, just a little bit different
An online start for the 2020 cohort

There is a first time for everything. This year, for the first time in MHPE history, we will be doing Unit 1 and Unit 7 online, and not in Maastricht. Our three partner sites have not taken final decisions yet, keeping open the option to do onsite units later in the year.

Our thoughts are with our partners in Singapore, New York and Canada, all fighting this pandemic. And of course our partner and staff in Egypt are in the thoughts of Dominique Waterval as well. We also think of students and former students who work in areas with less facilities and more fragile healthcare systems. We wish you strength and courage in these unpredictable times.

PhD in coronavirus times
Data collection delays & online defense ceremonies
It is clear that the corona crisis has a major impact on many PhD projects. Experiments and other data collection moments have to be cancelled or postponed, our clinical PhD candidates are working on the frontlines to fight this crisis, and others might be faced with challenging stay-at-home situations.

SHE defences in Corona time
Despite the COVID-19 virus, SHE had two promotions on March 19 and 20, in the middle of corona time.

On March 19, Dan Schumacher's promotion ‘Resident-Sensitive Quality Measures: Defining the Future of Patient-Focused Assessment’, took place remotely, with even almost the entire remote committee. Supervisors were: C.P.M. van der Vleuten, C. Caraccio, Dr. J.O. Busari, Dr. Eric Holmboe

A great job of the Science Vision team to get all this technically done.

On March 20, Sanne Schreurs was promoted, with some members remotely added and a limited audience of up to 30. Sanne finished her promotion with the distinction Cum Laude.

SHE is very proud and congratulates Dan and Sanne for their great performance.

SHE hopes for better times
SHE Summer Course 2020
Despite this uncertain times, we have started up the organization of the 2020 Summer Course PBL and beyond: applying learning principles in your education.

In this course we share many years of theoretical and practical experience in managing and assessing learning in student centred curricula as implemented by Maastricht University.

The programme offers an overview of the principal components and characteristics of the Maastricht approach to student centred education and in particular, how to integrate the principles behind student centred education in designing, teaching and assessing a student centred curriculum. This renewed course received an overall evaluation of 9.2 last year.

See the video if you would like to have a taste of the objectives, participants and experiences of last year summer course. Still some spots available for registration on our website. Keep up the spirit and let’s meet again soon!
