Publication of Art Matters Special Issue: Expanding Notions of ‘Making’ for Contemporary Artworks

We are delighted to announce the publication of papers by MACCH members Artemis Rüstau and Iona Goldie-Scot in the 2021 Art Matters Special Issue: Expanding Notions of ‘Making’ for Contemporary Artworks. The special issue examines critical issues related to the often protracted and distributed making of contemporary artworks, within and alongside their care, conservation and display. The contributors draw upon diverse theoretical frameworks from anthropology to ethnography, organisational theory, semiotics, sociology, gender studies, feminist theory and new materialism, among others.

Cape Town Day Zero / Ground Zero: A Decolonial River Walk

This online exhibition tells a story about a river in Cape Town, South Africa, about its colonial past and its Anthropocene future. It centers on the water course of the Liesbeek River, because this river’s heritage encapsulates—in the words of the Goringhaicona Khoi KhoiIndigenous Traditional Council High Commissioner Tauriq Jenkins—Cape Town’s ‘Ground Zero’, the place where colonial dispossession began.

6 December: Academic Workshop: Anti-Money Laundering/Counter-Terrorism Financing and the Art Market

MACCH affiliated researchers Donna Yates and Christoph Rausch collaborate with Marieke de Goede and Maja Dehouck to organize an academic workshop at the University of Amsterdam. The workshop takes place in the context of Marieke de Goede’s ERC Consolidator Grant project “FOLLOW: Following the Money from Transaction to Trial” and explores emerging conceptual and methodological approaches to the interdisciplinary study of AML/CFT regulation and the art market.

Maastricht University First University in The Netherlands to Sign NDE Manifesto

During the online event Digital Heritage @UM on Wednesday 16 June 2021, Nick Bos, vice president of the Executive Board of Maastricht University (UM), signed the manifesto of the Digital Heritage Network (NDE).
With the signing of the manifesto, and with it the National Digital Heritage Strategy, UM recognises the power of the network and reinforces its ambitions to make its digital heritage more visible, usable and sustainable.

International Conference Sustainable Digital Heritage, Terra Mosana

The International Conference of Terra Mosana on the topic of Sustainable Digital Heritage has been held recently both in Maastricht and online. The conference marked the closing of the Interreg Euregio Meuse-Rhine project Terra Mosana. The conference was organized by MACCH in collaboration with the Municipality of Maastricht.
On the 29th of September, the opening ceremony took place at the city hall of Maastricht and celebrated the achievements of the Terra Mosana project. The ceremony included a keynote lecture by Prof Sally Wyatt, short speeches by representatives of the participating regions and cities, as well as a presentation by coordinator of Interreg EMR Mark Vos, a preview of the key achievements of the project. The ceremony concluded with live demonstrations of the digital outputs of the project by the different city partners of the project (Tongeren, Julich, Maastricht, Liege, Leopoldsburg, and Achen). In addition, a series of scientific session were organized online in the following days to cover the sub-themes of collaborative practice, digital storytelling, governance and legal frameworks, as well as participatory practice of digital heritage.

Dr Eliza Steinbock has joined FASoS as Associate Professor of Gender and Diversity Studies within the Literature and Art department. They are an affiliated researcher of the Centre for Gender and Diversity and also to MACCH. Eliza specializes in the study of visuality and material culture, focusing on questions of transgender cultural production and the intersectional analysis of inclusion/exclusion mechanisms.

Appointment of Lars Van Vliet as Extraordinary Professor of Art Law, Particularly in its Private Law Aspects
