Call for proposals Global PhD Scholarship programme with KULeuven for 2 joint degree projects

By

The second Call for Proposals for two Joint Degree Projects in the framework of the Global PhD Scholarship Programme between KU Leuven and Maastricht University has opened. Deadline for submission is 2 December 2021, at 5 PM.

KULeuven has umbrella agreements with six prestigious partner institutions, of which Maastricht University is one. The umbrella agreement between KULeuven and Maastricht University can be found here.

More information on the call can be found on the KULeuven online research funding website ‘gedDOCumenteerd’. The application form can be found on this website. For reasons of efficiency we ‘share’ the application form with UCLouvain, which means that at the top of the application form, an applicant from MUMC+/FHML has to check the boxes ‘Maastricht University’ and ‘Health, Medicine and Life Sciences’.

Between KULeuven and Maastricht University it was agreed that a maximum of four projects would be selected in total, of which one project in the field of arts and social sciences, one project in the field of sensor engineering and two projects in the area of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML). The projects have a duration of maximum 4 years; they are not extendable. The start of the project and hence the doctoral mandate will be on October 1st of the year of approval (thus 1-10-2022, but other starting dates are possible).

For the two FHML- KULeuven Scholarships, the financial conditions are as follows: an approval contains a doctoral scholarship at KU Leuven for 2 years and a bench fee of €3.720 per year. The funding of the two additional years as well as the remaining bench fee will be paid for by the FHML (1 year + benchfee) and the research group (1 year + benchfee) together. Thus, a 4 year PhD project will be funded for 75% by the Scholarship (KULeuven 50% and FHML 25%) and for 25% by the research group (approximately € 55.000,= + benchfee).

Teams must provide proposals for 4-year doctoral research projects in joint supervision. The following selection criteria apply:

  • Primarily the scientific quality of the doctoral project (a highly qualitative level is required);
  • The quality of the promoter and the partner researcher and the promoter of the doctorate at the partner institution;
  • The quality of the planned collaboration and the supervision plan of the doctorate.

The deadline for submission is December 2nd, 2021, at 5 PM. The application form must be uploaded by the principal investigator from KULeuven in one pdf-file through the online KU Leuven application system, which is accessible (only for KU Leuven staff) through a link in the guidelines on the ‘GeDOCumenteerd’ funding website. AT UM side, we would like to ask you to submit the application simultaneously to r.becker@maastrichtuniversity.nl.
