Interactive lecture: Training in guideline development: a double-edged sword?

By

Health professionals’ knowledge of cost-conscious practices remains limited. Clinical guidelines aim to guide the decision process, influencing both the quality and cost-effectiveness of healthcare. Involving professionals in the guideline development process could increase their motivation and competence in using guidelines appropriately.

The international consortium CoCoCare (Creating Value-Based Healthcare) is working on training about guideline development for different groups of health professionals in the Netherlands. In this online lunchtime talk, the CoCoCare researchers will further explain their ideas and raise issues for discussion.

Date and time: Tuesday 5 October, 12.00-13.00 PM
Registration: before 21 September at secretariaat-educ@maastrichtuniversity.nl or h.sijen@maastrichtuniversity.nl

Background

Rising health expenditures continue to threaten the sustainability of healthcare systems worldwide. Nevertheless, health professionals’ knowledge of cost-conscious practices remains limited. Clinical guidelines aim to guide the decision process, influencing both the quality and cost-effectiveness of healthcare. Involving professionals in the guideline development process could increase their motivation and competence in using guidelines appropriately.

In the Erasmus-project CoCoCare, an international consortium developed, implemented and evaluated a training program about guidelines for residents. The training consists of three elements: online modules, workshop (face-to-face or online), and assignments that participants work on over a period of six to eight months. The topics of the training include general introduction to clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, patients’ perspective in clinical guidelines, cost-conscious care, and guideline implementation. At the end of the training, the participants are encouraged to develop a guideline on the topic of choice.

In a new project ‘Leerplatform richtlijnontwikkeling: toekomstbestendig en duurzaam’ (subsidized by ZonMW) we will work on training about guideline development for different groups of health professionals in the Netherlands, including physicians, nurses and allied health professionals. The project is led by UM, Academic Center of Epileptology Kempenhaeghe Maastricht UMC+ and the ‘FMS Kennisinstituut’ in partnership with AKWA, NHG, V&VN, KNGF and patient federations. The ambition of the consortium is to professionalize all Dutch healthcare professionals in applying cost-conscious guidelines and align guideline development between different groups of professionals.

In this lunchtime talk, we will further explain our ideas and raise issues for discussion. We will need your input to reach our ambitions!
