Introducing: Sarah Schoenmaekers

Sarah Schoenmaekers is associate professor of European law at the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University. In November 2020 she was appointed as endowed professor of European law, in particular the culturally corrected market economy. The aim of the chair is to give an impulse to legal research on the relationship between culture (including language) and the internal market in the European legal order.

Central research questions are: To what extent can culture and language constitute barriers to free movement in the EU and to what extent can they stimulate and act as a catalyst for free movement?; In how far do European cultural and economic policies conflict which each other?; Should and could cultural and linguistic policies be more reflected in the economic policies of the Union? If so, how can this be accomplished?; What can Member States and subnational public and private entities do to increase attention for cultural cooperation in economic affairs?

The chair is established in collaboration with Algemeen Nederlands Verbond (ANV) and is supported by the ANV Tijmen Knecht Fund. For more information please click here.
