Fireplace Talk on Public Health beyond the Pandemic

Maastricht University Campus Brussels, in partnership with the Association of Public Schools in the European Region (ASPHER), is organising a Fireplace Talk event on the topic of Public Health beyond the pandemic. The discussion will focus on the functions of public health, the challenges it faces, especially in light of the current pandemic, and what is the future of public health after the pandemic. 

We will have the pleasure of hearing from leading figures in public health on national and international levels with academic and practical experience. 

This event was introduced by the Director of Campus Brussels, Prof. Mariolina Eliantonio, and Associate Director, Associate Prof. Paul Stephenson. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Katarzyna Czabanowska from the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, Maastricht University. 

 

Katarzyna Czabanowska

Katarzyna Czabanowska is a professor in Public Health Leadership and Workforce Development at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences at Maastricht University. She co-directs Governance and Leadership in European Public Health programme. Her research focus is on public health workforce development, public health leadership, competence-based education and training, identification of skill gaps between the job market and taught curricula.  She is the former President of the Association of the Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER), Honorary Member of the UK Faculty of Public Health - Royal College of Physicians. She serves as a WHO expert in the area of Public Health Leadership and public health workforce development and planning.

Andrzej Jan Rys

Dr. Andrzej Ryś is a medical doctor specialised in radiology and public health, who graduated from Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland. He founded in 1991 and ran as Director until 1997 the School of Public Health at the Jagiellonian University. He served as Director of the Krakow’s City Health Department and continued his career as Deputy Minister of Health in Poland where he was member of the Polish EU accession negotiators team for the harmonisation of the Polish Health Care Law with the EU’s Acquis Communautaire. 

In 2006, he became Director for Public Health and Risk Assessment at the Directorate-General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO), in the European Commission. From 2011-2014, he assumed the position of Director for Health Systems and Products in DG SANCO. Since 2014, Dr. Andrzej Rys is the Director responsible for Health Systems, Medical Products and Innovation in DG SANTE.

Nadav Davidovitch

Prof. Nadav Davidovitch is an epidemiologist and public health physician and Head of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev’s School of Public Health. He is Chair of the Association of Public Health Physicians in Israel, the official Israel representative on the Executive Committee of the European Public Health Association, a member of various committees of the Israeli Ministry of Health including the cabinet of the “Magen Israel” program (a national program for fighting the coronavirus). Prof. Davidovitch is a member of various international committees including the Task Force on the Coronavirus of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region and an Honorary Member of the UK Faculty of Public Health - Royal College of Physicians.

Prof. Davidovitch has authored a great many articles and books on the subject of public health, health policy, health economics, health systems management, ethics and sociology of health. Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Israel, he  has been involved in research and the formulation of health policy and has advised various agencies in Israel and abroad on the need to make structural changes in the health system, with an emphasis on social issues and addressing health gaps.

José María Martín Moreno

Jose Martin-Moreno holds degrees from the University of Granada, Spain (MD, PhD), and from Harvard University, US (MPH, DrPH). His main medical specialty is Preventive Medicine and Public Health, with concentration in Epidemiology, Cancer and NCDs, Public Health services and Health Policy & Management.  

He previously served as Director of Programme Management at WHO Europe and Director-General and Chief Medical Officer of Spain. Additionally, he has also advised the European Commission, the Scientific and Technical Office of the European Parliament, the European Institute of Oncology and the International Agency for Research on Cancer. 

Dr. Martín-Moreno is currently full Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Valencia, Director of the Medical Education and Quality Unit at the Valencian Clinical Hospital, Chair of the ASPHER Honours Committee & Director of the Andrija Stampar European Summer School of Public Health. Additionally, he is Academician of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Spain, and Honorary Fellow of the UK Faculty of Public Health - Royal College of Physicians.
