Description and aims
This course is about telling clear, urgent and compelling stories about complex content - stories that stick with your audience. You will be offered several practical tools which will help you communicate effectively:
- with different audiences, from industry collaborators to scientific peers and from students to interested laymen;
- in various types of communication: from grant applications to popular blogs, and from scientific presentations to your layman's speech.

You will leave with a storytelling toolbox that contains practical techniques and formats for:
- tailoring your story to various audiences;
- communicating urgency and relevance;
- providing a rich and engaging context to make your story meaningful to others.
Methods
- Learn the Analytic Storytelling method through theory, examples and exercises.
- Experiment with various storytelling formats and techniques, by applying these to your own work.
- Receive written and on-the-spot feedback from your trainer as well as from your fellow participants.
Duration
The course consists of a preparatory online module including an assignment (± 2-3 hours) followed by one full training day (10.00-17.00 hours).

Costs
PhD candidates: When registering for this training, tick the target group to which you belong: PhD candidate. As of June 1st 2022, as a PhD candidate, you can subscribe without prior consent of your supervisor and you no longer have to enter a budget number. The Staff Career Centre will charge the stated costs of the workshop directly to your faculty. These costs consist of 50% of the costs for this training (implementation and accommodation fees), as the other 50% is paid for by the SCC.
Postdocs: Before subscribing to this workshop, please discuss your participation with your supervisor/manager. When registering for this training, tick the target group to which you belong: Postdoc. We will charge your faculty or research group the indicated costs for this training, by using the budget number you will have to provide. After registration, your supervisor will receive a message about your participation in this course. The costs consist of 50% of the costs for this training (implementation and accommodation fees), as the other 50% is paid for by the SCC.
Cancellation regulation
If you cancel less than sixteen working days before the start of the course, your administrative unit will be charged 25% of the cost price. If you cancel less than ten working days before the course starts, or during the course, your administrative unit will be charged 100% of the cost price. This also applies to participants who are absent without having given prior notice.
* Courses for PhD candidates and postdocs are only accessible for employees who are employed by Maastricht University.
