Job description

Our research institute

The School of MHeNS (https://mhens.mumc.maastrichtuniversity.nl/) investigates the causes, mechanisms and treatments of mental disorders and disease of the nervous and sensory systems. Our neuroimaging research is conducted in close collaboration with the Maastricht Brain Imaging Centre at the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience (MBIC) (https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/research/m-bic/m-bic-research) and with several international imaging consortia. The position is embedded in two of our thematic priority lines, neuroimaging and neuromodulation. In our neuromodulation programme, clinicians and researchers from several departments (neurosurgery, neurology, psychiatry, anaesthesiology, urology, otorhinolaryngology) collaborate on the mechanistic understanding of neuromodulation for neurological, psychiatric and sensory disorders and on the development of new invasive and non-invasive neuromodulation therapies.

The project

The project will be part of the JPND NEURIPIDES consortium, coordinated by Professor David Linden (https://www.neurodegenerationresearch.eu/initiatives/annual-calls-for-proposals/closed-calls/open-calls/novel-imaging-and-brain-stimulation-methods-and-technologies/). The post-holder will also work closely with Professor Rainer Goebel (MBIC) and Professor Yasin Temel (head of the department of neurosurgery). The aim of the project is to improve our mechanistic understanding of the therapeutic effects of deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease and, on this basis, develop new protocols for neurofeedback (using real-time functional MRI data) that will enable patients to self-regulate pathophysiological circuits. The appointee will work in a stimulating and vibrant inter-faculty research environment and get the opportunity of international exchange visits with our consortium partners. Appropriate training and mentorship will be provided.
