SRAL 35 Symposium: Restoration - Implementation and Research

MACCH partner, Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg (SRAL) has celebrated its 35th anniversary on September 30, 2022 with the symposium “Restoration: Implementation and Research.” In 35 years, conservation practice in the Netherlands has developed strongly, parallel to the growth of academic education for conservators.

The symposium was an opportunity to reflect on several developments within the field: where does the conservation practice now stand in the disciplines of paintings, historic interiors, sculpture and modern art? What overlap and cooperation strengthen our knowledge and insights? How can we innovate within the field and share our knowledge?
Lectures by various speakers addressed themes such as: working in the cross-over area of four

conservation disciplines, innovations for the implementation of conservation treatments,

decision-making and the time factor. During the symposium the conservation studio in the Bonnefanten was visited to discover recently conserved works of the collection, such as the large Crucifix by Jan van Steffeswert.
