Introducing New Member: Liang-Kai Yu

Hi everyone, my name is Liang-Kai YU. It is my great pleasure to join the Department of Literature and Art as a PhD candidate.

I am in the second year of my PhD, and my research focuses on queer politics in contemporary art museums. I am interested in curatorial approaches of LGBT-themed art exhibition, collection, and collaborative queer feminist art projects in Dutch and international art museums.

My PhD project is part of the broader project ‘The Critical Visitor: The Heritage Sector at a Crossroads: The Way of Intersectionality’, which is led by associate professor Eliza Steinbock. My research project is supervised by Eliza Steinbock (Maastricht) and Dirk van den Heuvel (TU Delft and Het Nieuwe Instituut).

I am currently an embedded researcher at the Van Abbemuseum, exploring the institutional desire of queering museum practices. Previously in my MA studies in Arts and Culture: Museum and Collections at Leiden University, I have explored curatorial strategies of contemporary artists and the Gay Museum* in Berlin. As a freelance curator, I have co-curated a queer feminist art exhibition Survival of the Exceptional at Tainan Art Museum (2020-2021). I am looking forward to any research and curatorial collaborations in the Netherlands.
