Lunch Concerts at FASoS

During the academic year 2022-2023 you can enjoy short concerts of classical music once per month in the lecture hall "Turnzaal" at FASoS, sponsored by MACCH.

This concert series with a variety of classical music, is for everyone, from music lovers to those who are not so familiar with classical music or those who want just to discover it.

The original idea behind the lunch concerts initiative was to bring classical music closer to the students and staff of Maastricht University. Together with Jorge Lozano, a student of the pre-master Arts and Heritage at FASoS and also a musician, we thought on how to undo some practices that are taken for granted in a live classical music concert to achieve our goal. For this series we focused on four aspects: location, time, duration and variety. The focus on these aspects allowed us to provide concerts that break with some of the protocols and social behavior that are associated to theatres and concert halls. The concerts are not seen as a special event that changes people’s routine but as one of the activities that are offered in the daily life of the university. With this series, we also wanted to show different kinds of ensembles and repertory to show how classical music encompasses different traditions and that it is not limited to the canonical repertory that is recognizable by many people.

Since January 2023 we are implementing changes in the setting of the hall and surveys to get to know more how the audience is experimenting these changes. Our experience is that these concerts have been a way for some part of the audience to listen to live classical music for the first time in many months or even years. The series is also a way to open up the university to the regular public since the concerts are open for everyone, not only students and staff of Maastricht University.
