The Art of Funding: Financing the Arts An Examination of Legal Bottlenecks in Government Funding of the Cultural Sector
Sender:
Ellen Hardy
On 2 March 2023, Ellen Hardy defended her PhD thesis at UM. In her research, she looked through a legal lens at how public money is distributed in the cultural sector and offered solutions to the problems the sector experiences in doing so.
The cultural sector is funded by the government in various ways. It does so through subsidies of all shapes and sizes, as well as through art and culture prizes. Introducing New Member: Kulsoom Malik, new Management Assistant for MACCH
My name is Kulsoom Malik. I am a first-year Research Master CAST student interested in the intersection of urbanism, ecology and technology. In 2019, I graduated from the Lahore University of Management Sciences with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Anthropology with a minor in English Literature. My previous research projects focused on the production of space at Lawrence Garden, a colonial-era park and botanical garden in Pakistan, and on representations of emerging urban modernities in Pakistani films. In the past, I worked as a consultant in the corporate world, as an English and Theory of Knowledge teacher for IB students and as a researcher for a UNESCO-funded heritage project in Lahore, Pakistan. Given the diversity of interests, I am excited to be at UM—and now at MACCH where more creative, interdisciplinary approaches and their practical integration are encouraged. I am looking forward to aiding in future projects and working more closely with the faculty and researchers at the institute.
