SHE Collaborates (SHEC), the SHE office for international collaboration in health professions education capitalises on Maastricht University’s more than 40 years of experience implementing student-centered learning in medicine and the health sciences. Through innovative training and consulting in the areas of education, management and research, SHEC promotes improvement in health professions education practices and is continuously involved in new projects to create meaningful impact.

SHE Collaborates and Study Smart combine forces

Entry-level students often experience challenges in finding a suitable, effective learning strategy. Research shows that 75% of the students use ineffective learning strategies when preparing for their exams and tutorial meetings. To help students out, Maastricht University has developed the Study Smart training. This training combines decades of research in cognitive psychology on effective learning strategies with training material to equip students with the skills for life-long learning and self-study, especially in a student-centred curriculum.

SHE Collaborates and Study Smart combined forces to make this training accessible worldwide. The Study Smart training can be part of capacity building projects or offered separately. More information about Study Smart see: https://www.studysmartpbl.com

SHE Collaborates keeps inspiring in education with an extracurricular course offer

Following a successful pilot last year, SHEC will once again offer their extracurricular course on International Project Development to FHML students. In this course, SHE Collaborates staff share their knowledge on project development in an international setting as well as many of the terms and conditions that students would encounter in the real world of global health funding.

Positive feedback from students in the pilot cohort inspired exciting changes to the course format, which also incorporates the realities we face in the current Covid 19 world. A variety of educational formats supports the interactive teamwork to ensure that students acquire skills in project development and collaboration in global health.

Sustainable education for people in crisis and emergency situations

With the recently awarded Nuffic project, SHE Collaborates aims to improve the quality of education for refugees and Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in Ethiopia. Refugee and IDP children have specific needs, often living in an insecure environment with exposure to trauma and violence.

During the 1.5 years of the project, SHEC will use a training-of-trainers (ToT) method to develop a basic teacher-training course for a low-resource environment. This course combines teacher skills with health education in a way that the teaching modules become a vehicle to transfer health education. The teachers will reach the children in the classroom and their siblings through a child-to-child approach.

In order to get a better insight into the needs of teachers and pupils in IDP and host settings, the project will encourage and facilitate the development of research projects.
