Abstract

In Europe, 2 people out of 3 die because of chronic diseases, which are deeply related to their lifestyle. Policy makers are well aware; yet, the current set of policies is not fully equipped to deal with the health challenges posed by modern food and nutrition habits.
Aim of this thesis is to assess: How different sources of evidence contribute to European policy making in the field of food and nutrition? The goal is threefold. First, the research wants to approach the current European food and nutrition policy landscape through environmental lenses, to identify policies that are good for human health and for the environment, too. Moreover, it wants to assess whether economic analyses can help policy-makers in identifying and implementing those policies which are good value for money. Third, the research aims to make sure that the chosen policies are also those with a focus on the most disadvantaged ones. This project is carried out through literature reviews, policy briefs and content analysis. Finally, the dissertation presents a case study on coffee.
