UM Impact Prize for Katya Sion
During the annual Maastricht University Dinner, Katya Sion (Ageing and Long-Term Care) received the Impact Prize for her thesis "Connecting conversations: experienced quality of care from the resident’s perspective: a narrative method for nursing homes". Katya developed a new method to assess the perceived quality of nursing home care through personal stories.
The narrative method Connecting Coversations ("Ruimte voor Zorg") and its principles can support a shift in the nursing home culture, in which mandatory registrations, tasks and checklists make more room for conversations, relationships and a learning culture. This can contribute towards achieving a higher quality of care, quality of life and quality of work for residents, family and staff in nursing homes.

We would like to express our gratitude to Professor Ruud Kempen, who recently retired. Ruud is the founding father of the social gerontology at Maastricht University. Furthermore, he has always been the mainstay of the Living Lab in Ageing and Long-Term Care. He received a lot of national and international recognition for his research and for his contribution to education within the Health Sciences. Thanks in part to him, there is a solid foundation for future scientific education and research that contributes to the further underpinning of care for the elderly.

A new tool for healthcare providers in supporting patients in work and income
Many healthcare providers deal with patients who have questions about work and income. In practice, however, it is difficult to give the patient specific and appropriate advice. To this end, a new tool was developed by CAPHRI-PhD candidate Maarten Butink and Prof. Dr. Angelique de Rijk (Functioning, Participation & Rehabilitation and Health Inequities and Societal Participation).

WARNING: Do note use or refer to the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale
The Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (also: MMAS-4 and MMAS-8) is a scale for assessing adherence to medical regimens. The MMAS is protected by U.S. copyright laws and use of the scale requires a license from the company MMAS Research LLC.
Please note: This company is known to use aggressive tactics in order to sell licenses to researchers. These activities are controversial at best. To avoid any claims, the UM Executive Board strongly advises all researchers to refrain from using the MMAS at all and even avoid referring to the scale in any publication.
If you are contacted by MMAS Research or the MMAS company representative Steven Trubow, do not respond to their emails and contact the legal department: secretariaat-jz@maastrichtuniversity.nl.
