We look back on a wonderful year for NUTRIM in which we again achieved a lot together. With many highlights to be proud of. Think for instance of the great number of PhD defences, research grants, new appointed professors, the attention for NUTRIM in the media, new collaborations and a very successful symposium. We have highlighted a few in this newsletter and are confidently turning the page towards 2024. I would like to thank everyone both support and research staff very much for their efforts in 2023 and wish you very happy and relaxing holidays.

Clinical Research Unit officially opened at Maastricht UMC+
On January 25th, the NUTRIM Clinical Research Unit (CRU) for patient-related research on nutrition and metabolism was officially opened at Maastricht UMC+. This new research facility is an example of how science and clinical practice can directly reinforce each other. Nutrition and exercise have a variety of effects on metabolism. Therefore, both can contribute to a successful recovery from illness or a better starting point for before or during treatment.

2023, the year of the NUTRIM podcast
By 2023, more and more of our researchers have presented themselves with their research on podcast or radio and thereby to a wider audience. Some nationally and others internationally.
Our impact of our research is very important to communicate in the media in either podcast, paper, radio or on television. It helps to foster discussion, agenda setting and the promotion of NUTRIM as a centre of expertise and to make us proud. In any case very worth listening to again.

Inflammations under control, but still abdominal pain
Many people with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis continue to experience persistent abdominal pain. They feel that they are not getting enough help for their pain, even when their inflammations are well managed. Because there is still little known about this form of chronic pain, gastroenterologist Dr. Zlatan Mujagic of the Maastricht University Medical Center+ will conduct research to better understand it.

Grateful for so many new test heroes.
We will continue recruiting in 2024
The NUTRIM departments of Nutrition and Movement Science and Human Biology conduct research into healthy lifestyles and how they can affect health.
Evaluation in 2023 showed that over 60 new test heroes indicated to be willing to participate in NUTRIM research after a campaign with L1. A great achievement, as test subjects are crucial in NUTRIM research. The test heroes campaign created regional awareness and absolutely contributed to this. Plans are being made for 2024 to continue the campaign with a number of follow-up stories about the test heroes and what their contribution to research has brought to the researchers.

NUTRIM’s Julia Bels, science story
How to prevent muscle loss in the ICU
FHML/MUMC+ create science stories that showcase the (potential) impact of our research. In July it was Julia’s turn on how to prevent muscle loss in the ICU. People who have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for a while lose a significant amount of muscle mass and, consequently, muscle strength. Julia Bels studies how nutrition can help ICU patients in preserving and strengthening their muscles. Watch the science story here
