Breaking the Silence: Understanding the Toll of Addiction on Youth and Families
Dorine van Namen, PhD candidate at the department of Health Promotion (RL PHPC), studied the impact of family members with an addiction on thousands of young people. They experience stress, health problems, PTSD, and abuse, especially due to alcohol addiction. Living with an addicted family member is unpredictable and affects everything, including health, study, and social relationships. The taboo surrounding this issue needs to be broken, as many young people suffer without seeking help. Informal support, such as from teachers, is crucial, but awareness needs to be increased. Dorine advocates for more attention and assistance for the affected young people and their families.

The sector plan also funds researchers and methodological innovations, with the aim of creating a community that actively shares knowledge and experiences.
